On Kinzhal as a "real hypersonic weapon" I hoped everything was decided back in 2018: speed above 5 Mach, maneuvering inside the atmosphere, a significant "non-ballistic" part of the trajectory - bingo, this is it. That said...

IRGC-ASF Commander BG Hajizadeh has told press that Iran has developed a hypersonic missile that can manoeuvre at extremely high speed both inside and outside the atmosphere. He said among its capabilities will be to not just bypass, but target missile defence systems.

He emphasised that the missile will be able to evade both endoatmospheric and exoatmospheric ABM systems, and that it will be able to destroy any target, *especially* ABM systems. He described this as a generational leap that won't be countered for decades.
This is interesting because Iran has described what we think is a missile with a HGV before. That was Kheybar-Shekan, and it had a MaRV-type triconic HGV.

Making fast AShM is quite traditional for SU and RU school, and the ballistic missile is a good option (also, R-27K SLASBM). Still, given its range and speed one needs a serious ISR and targeting capabilities, and also terminal guidance.

Maneuverable reentry vehicles (MaRV) and hypersonic glide vehicles (HGV) as a subtype of those make sense to be a primary payload type in this case, however there are obvious gaps in Russian ISR capabilities anyway.

New name for the Russian hypersonic weapons geeks: Zmeyevik. According to TASS sources, an anti-ship ballistic missile with HGV payload for the Navy coastal missile units, to strike large surface targets, somewhat like DF-21D or DF-26.

Might be safe to say that now to there are at least three nuclear-armed HGVs on alert, with at least four silo launchers.

Silver bullets and super-duper missiles are all over the media, but those are evolutionary developments, although some of them are challenging. But challenges are there both for the 'attacker' and 'defender', and these weapons and ways to counter are extremely expensive.

☝️I was pretty sure that TBG and ARRW are different branches of the US hypersonic weapons development. Turns out I was wrong.
Good interview about SS-25 with an expert, who has real knowledge of this weapon both as a practitioner (14 MD) and a researcher (4 TsNII).

TASS source claims that covid19 affected the tests, as up to 7 launches were planned for 2020, but the second one had to be in mid-Spring, not late June.

MiG-31 is one of its kind. It can fly fast and high, and launch huge missiles. Still, the "-K", which is part of "Kinzhal" system most likely suffered a lot in terms of performance. Taking off, flying, launching or landing with a thing this big is a challenge in itself.

4) AFAIK there were some references in Russian media and tender documentation, etc. using expressions like "Rubezh-Avangard missile system". Personal theory: it was an umbrella R&D name with emphasis on using more or less existing tech for missile defense penetration...
