We're in DC to present at a #IACHRHearing about challenges faced by people from Northern Triangle countries seeking asylum here.

As the hearing was about to start, the US gov literally walked out.

They said they can't attend because we're there and we're suing them.

Pathetic.
This is a cowardly act by our government who are supposed to represent the wishes of the American people. The @IACHumanRights (@CIDH) was founded with a mission to promote and protect human rights in the American hemisphere.
If the US gov't is unwilling to listen to testimony from the public about the challenges faced by asylum seekers from Northern Triangle countries, they're saying 👋🏾 to the principle that this gov't is ruling with the consent of the governed & further shutting the door on asylum.

Our ask to the @IACHumanRights is to:

1) Investigate the info provided in this and other hearings to review wether the U.S. laws, policies, practices, and actions are consistent with its international legal obligations;
@IACHumanRights 2) Undertaking an urgent mission to visit sites both in the U.S. and Mexico where migrants are being held, are being metered, or are being returned to wait in Mexico, as well as to attend judicial hearings and interview migrants and their lawyers;
@IACHumanRights 3) Issuing a statement reiterating the U.S.' obligations against non-refoulement of asylum seekers under international law and concuding that policies like "Remain in Mexico", metering, and asylum ban run afoul of those obligations.

Michael A. Knowles, Special Representative, National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council 119 is now speaking at the @IACHumanRights hearing about limitations on access to asylum. #IACHRHearing
@IACHumanRights Michael is an asylum officer, but today is only representing the union.

"This a union issue because this affects the actual fabric of our nation. As federal employees we must uphold the constitution." #IACHRHearing
@IACHumanRights "We have not previously been very active on public advocacy, but we now feel like it's important to do so. We are concerned that these changes on asylum, that are unlawful, are affecting officers who took an oath to uphold the constitution." #IACHRHearing youtube.com/channel/UCdk-e…
