Dear friends and supporters
It is with sadness, but great pride, that I step back from the role of Chairperson of the Association of Mixed Race Irish. Please find my full letter regarding my resignation below.

More than 6 years of campaigning with an amazing and growing community has been a period of my life which has been so rich and rewarding but exhausting too. In the interests of my health, and to allow others to step forward and provide the energetic leadership needed to keep
focus on the issues affecting our community, I have decided to resign from that role.
I left Dublin at the age of 20 after a childhood mostly spent in Mother and Baby homes and industrial schools, in which my mother had been persuaded that my twin brother and I should live.

Racism in Ireland: A Thread

Now that we’re finally talking about it, let's get into it. Some facts and figures, some observations, and some resources for those who would like to know more:

1/ The first reported deportation of the Irish state was in 1925 to a “black prince.”
2/ In the 1960s, racial violence against black med students was so severe that Nigerian newspapers warned their readers not to study in Ireland for their own safety.
3/ There is also evidence from Irish courts of young African men charged with “seduction” or “having carnal knowledge” of young Irish women, usually brought by the women’s fathers. In once case, a Nigerian medical student was ordered to pay £700 in damages to the woman’s family.

I think it's REALLY time to start being very clear about the level of racism that exists in Ireland. So, in solidarity with the Ryan's, let me tell you just a few of my family's experiences: 1.Being called a "n&£er lover" "racist to the Irish" "a fucking spanner" on @Twitter 1/
2) getting a long message on @facebook about 4 years ago that told me I married a monkey and my son was an abomination. 3) My son's football coach telling me he didn't trust black people as far as he could throw them & he was glad they had "got me back from that place" (Kenya) 2/
4) A different football coach "joking" that he was going to sell my 9 year old to White Slave Traders. I had to explain slavery to my child that day. 5) Being asked, regularly, if it's true what they say about black men's penis's.

THREAD: Fair play 2 the Ryans 4their courage &dignity. Shocking that a loving couple like this can be the focus of such racist poison just for wanting to bring up a family. Shocking that R media &institutions let this happen #LateLate #LoveNotHate #IrelandThisisUs #IamIrish 1/12
2/12 Unfortunately they're NOT unique, not by a long stretch. @INARireland’s iReport.ie data going back to 2013 documents over 2000 racist incidents &hate crimes, impacts &outcomes. Online & IRL attacks on minority men women &children including babies R sadly common
3/12: Eg this snapshot from the first 6 months of 2017 which we know captures *only a tiny fraction* of all incidents:
