There were some really great questions at my #ICWSM2020 paper Q&A today! Short thread with some FAQs about the law and ethics of scraping data for research, based on that discussion. (Blog post + paper at link) medium.com/@cfiesler/spid…
Q: What about copyright?
A: For the most part, fair use likely protects data collection for the purpose of research. This just means that it's not something additional you need to worry about on topic of TOS violations or ethical considerations. [1/2]
So I tend to think that copyright isn't that interesting/relevant here. Though remember that it's not the PLATFORM whose copyright that would matter--it's the content creator. Instagram does not own those photos; the individual users do.

Peer review is broken: a thread

Starting with: "Our process is not set up to combat such collusion" and then meandering to academic integrity, ethics, open science, volunteer labor, and whatever else comes up. medium.com/@tnvijayk/pote…
First, this is not the only problem, but peer review can be gamed. Regardless of whether this particular accusation is true, it's clear that this could happen. There are two things at issue here: (1) how the process is set up; and (2) academic integrity.
The process of peer review isn't set up well to combat misuse/collusion/gaming. Blinded peer review is an illusion a huge amount of the time, and conflicts of interest essentially rely on the honor system. And there aren't resources to keep a close eye on it.

When talking about online safety/abuse/misinformation one can image about content- and people-driven units of investigation; and then their mix. In each, we can start from the smaller units and work our way up. 2/
1) *Sub-resource* units: e.g. claims, statements, images. These are often not uniquely addressable, may appear in multiple locations. Sample paper:
