#ifirstknewIwasLGBTQ

I was 11 or 12. Living in a conservative, religious, semi-rural Utah town (population 27K - having grown from 5K only 10 years earlier - there were 80 acres of farm in front of my house)

I literally did not know of even ONE out LGBTQ+ person in my town \1
Lacking ANY role models, information, or words to describe my feelings

But I knew that changing in the locker room for PE made me intensely uncomfortable. To the point where, without explanation, the school allowed me to change in the visiting team locker room for privacy \2
This was DECADES before the internet became more than an 'interesting experiment' for a few selected universities

So, without role models or information, I taught myself how to 'tuck' for a more femme appearance

And then stopped because I was terrified I would be discovered \3

1/ I’ve found that if you scratch the surface of organisations keen to label 12 year old children LGB or T what you invariably find is that what they are most interested in & excited about is labelling 12 year old children trans.
2/ Why have we allowed the LGBT label to act as cover for organisations to advance a child trans narrative?

Few of these organisations appear concerned about advocating for girls who may be same-sex attracted, lesbian, unless it is to tell them that they are really boys.
3/ The conflation of sex & gender is worrying when it concerns adults but it’s hugely irresponsible & dangerous when it concerns children.

A 12 year old that is affirmed as gay is not the same as a 12 year old affirmed as trans.

#ifirstknewIwasLGBTQ at like... 8-10, when it turned out that Shiek was Zelda all along... And then when I couldn't place why I loved Shiek/Zelda so much (turns out the idea of sliding between genders was, you know, a big thing!)
I didn't have the word for nonbinary back then, but I always, ALWAYS knew I wasn't happy being a girl. There was always a huge fascination with people like Mana, for example, who played fluidly with gender presentation
I knew I wanted more than I had. I knew I resented some of my features and I wanted change. There's a reason I was FASCINATED with female hyenas as much as I was.
