Do we need a "New Deal" for journalism? @Forum_InfoD and its chair @cdeloire from @RSF_inter say we do and new report from the Forum looks at policy options - I was honored to chair working group providing input to the report.

Report: informationdemocracy.org/wp-content/upl…

Highlights in🧵1/19
In my foreword, I write "if governments want to do more than talk about the value of journalism, and actually help [those] who are leading on forging new ways forward for the profession and the industry, they will need to step up and take real action" 2/19 rasmuskleisnielsen.net/2021/06/16/les…
Whether this is a priority is for the public and its elected officials to decide. As we consider this, I'd highlight (a) there are policies that have proof of concept but (b) at best, most governments have done little or nothing.

Inaction is a decision as much as action is.

Keep getting calls from journalists and others about the draft Australian News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code so some points to add to the thread I posted last year. I'm glad there is political focus on future of news, but sceptical of draft code as is 1/23
Can policy help sustain independent news media? We know for a fact it can. Is it justified? That’s a political question. I personally believe it is in many cases. Journalism and news, with its many imperfections, is a public good and important for our democracy and societies 2/23
If one recognize that fact, and embrace the idea of policy intervention, are there then options we have reason to believe work? Nothing is perfect, and all this is political, but I think there on balance are, have written about them for years e.g here reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/what-can-be-do… 3/23

The Independent News Emergency Relief Coordination (#INERC) launched a month ago today to (1) collect data on #covid19 crisis impact on independent news media, (2) help funders coordinate, and (3) offer guidelines for those willing and able to step up.

INERC is a temporary collaboration, supplementing many other important efforts, launched by founding members @bbcmediaaction, @CIMA_Media, @Facebook, @MediaGFMD, @Google, @luminategroup, @macfound, and @NewspaperWorld, all already connected through discussions around #IFPIM.
Since launch, we have started fielding our joint survey, now almost ready to launch in additional launches, and welcomed new members @gatesfoundation, @DemocracyFund, @ejcnet, @IWMF, and @OSFJournalism, all of whom fund independent news media reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/risj-review/up…

1. Today we are launching the Independent News Emergency Relief Coordination #INERC, an effort to help funders willing and able to provide financial support for independent news media better understand where need is greatest and coordinate their efforts reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/risj-review/in…
2. #Covid_19 means many independent news media face catastrophic declines in revenues and consequently significant cost-cutting or closing down. This is bad for accountability, and undermines news media's ability to keep public informed.

3. Here's what #INERC aspires to do:
-collect data to identify areas of greatest need
advise funders as to where they can make the greatest possible difference
-provide optional guidelines for those considering stepping up to provide funding help for independent news media
