1/ In the Iliad, Homer often refers to the uniqueness of the capabilities of the armies of Achilles and Ajax, where they are described as dense formations of elite soldiers, who use brilliant tactical battles under the guidance of highly trained warlords.

➡️ Thus mighty Ajax charged them, not one, he bade them, should give ground backward from the corpse, nor yet fight in front of the rest of the Achaeans as one pre-eminent above them all; but stand firm close beside the corpse and do battle hand to hand. ➡️

I am currently reading the #iliad because I needed a sleep book and wow. Y'all I was not PREPARED.

I thought I knew the story of Helen of Troy and wow I did NOT AT ALL. (🧵/n til I get bored)
Keep in mind also I'm only like 60 pages in here.

Versions of the story I learned:

1. Helen married Meneleus and he was ugly/old/boring. She met Paris, became fantastically horny, and ran off with him. 1,000 ships later, here we are.
2. Helen married Meneleus, Paris came for a visit, fell hard for Helen (also Venus promised him the most beautiful woman in the world if he picked her in the Judgement of Paris, another story), and stole her.

I just heard a tinnitus while communicating telepathically with SRJ and heard a highpitched tinnitus in my left wear and felt a resultant slight loss of hearing and dullness plus weakness and debility.

I had just left a comment and given the link to my Instagram page about
20 minutes.

I am writing this as I am about to leave my apartment.

I just finished re-reading the #Iliad

Or rather, I read @stephenfry’s highly enjoyable version “Troy”

Here are a couple of points with some relevance to today’s war in #Ukraine

A short 🧵(with some classical art)

/1 Image
Who is to blame for the war, and at what point did it become inevitable?

Was it the Trojan abduction of Helen, the judgement of Paris, the lottery Odysseus organised, Paris’ and Antimachus' undermining of the Greek ultimatum?...

/2 Image
Or was it the challenge Troy presented to Agamemnon’s hegemony as “king of men”....
... or the Greek pursuit of Troy’s spoils?

In the case of Russia vs Ukraine, we also see multiple reasons being debated, some more realistic than others.

(Did someone say 'Mearsheimer'?)

Maybe the most beautiful copy of Homer's #Iliad. The "Florentine Homer" is written by the scribe Ioannes Rhosos, a Byzantine Greek émigré from Crete and completed in Florence on 16 May 1466.

The frontispiece of the manuscript depicting Homer surrounded by the Muses! Isn't gorgeous? Image
The calligraphy of Ioannes Rhosos is just superb. Two decades later again in Florence, Demetrius Chalkokondyles and Demetrius Damilas, also Byzantine Greeks, produced the first printed edition of the works of Homer using typefaces.
*I like the calligraphy though. Image
