@DrGuddiSingh #covid

devastating impact on #NHS after years of underfunding & staff shortages: long waits for emergency services, operations postponed, delayed cancer treatment & difficult to secure doctor & dentist appointments.

Why & how can we help?

🎄Christmas approaching
🚀Infections rocketing
📢Scientists calling for action
😴The PM asleep at the wheel

Have we learned nothing?

Today we launch our campaign to ensure the #Covid inquiry is open, fair & robust so that we can hold this govt to account. Join us
The govt has shown contempt for truth & transparency time and again
▶️ They refused to tell us what science they were following
▶️ They withheld data
▶️ They abused emergency powers
▶️ They gave friends & donors £££s in Covid contracts
▶️ They made rules which they didn't follow
170,000 people have died. More than 1 million are living with chronic illness. It didn't need to be this way.

We're building a coalition of scientists, experts & journalists to ensure that the #Covid public inquiry gives people the answers they deserve

With just over a week to go until 'Freedom Day' the latest figures from @chrischirp at today's #IndependentSage briefing show infection rates ↗️ across the board. Cases in over-60s in the Northeast rapidly climbing to levels last seen in November peak
Latest Imperial REACT study shows highest rates in young people overall and much higher rates in men than women over last month, probably a result of people getting together to watch the #Euros
'Steep drop-off' in vaccination rates among young people 'not that surprising' says @chrischirp given that government messaging this week has been that young people are fine if they get #COVID19. Around 30% of population still not vaccinated

At 5pm today Boris Johnson is expected to announce that wearing face masks and social distancing will become voluntary after July 19. The government isn't even pretending to follow the science any more. It’s making it up
#HerdImmunity

With a third of the adult population not fully-vaccinated and children left completely unprotected, this is a dangerous, unethical and unscientific experiment on the population, without consent
It’s projected that 1 million more people will have been infected by July 19 - that’s another 100,000 to 200,000 people who will go on to suffer the devastating effects of #LongCovid, including children

Just re-reading the @IndependentSage school recommendations. It says that "A Young Minds report found that 87% of school pupils said that they were lonely during the first lockdown, and that 69% of those back at school said their mental health was poor.
Yet 40% said their school had no counsellor to talk to and only 27% said they had any conversation with a staff member about their well-being. 23% said there was less mental health support at their school compared to before the pandemic, only 9% said there was more."
While we're homeschooling again, I wonder which strategies people have found work best, to keep their children engaged with their friends? Also, do people have a view on which homeschooling software is keeping children engaged? #homeschooling #IndependentSAGE

Is it safe to see relatives at Christmas? What do the members of #IndependentSAGE think? And what are they personally choosing to do?
1/ First up, @Kit_Yates_Maths: "I have an 80 year old dad and a 70 year old step-mum, so we're taking the decision not to see them, even though it's legally allowed. For me, the risk is too great."
2/ @GabrielScally: "We'll see one of my daughters in the garden or outside somewhere... we've come through so much this year, it would be so wrong to risk anything at this point in time."

Meanwhile in #France,
"the peak of this second wave is over"

(according to the President in his Adress to the Nation):
Wait... "the peak is over" doesn´t mean "it´s back to normal"!

Confinement will only fall on December 15,
if there´s less than 5.000 new cases a day.
(today it´s ~9.000).

France is disappointed.🙁

Although they certainly can make it happen.
Meanwhile in #Switzerland:
(excess mortality of the second wave is significant)

Good news: fastest decrease in infections happens in the worst hit areas now.

1. Why does @IndependentSage recommend maximizing remote learning at #Universities from the START of term?

Does SAGE agree?

Does the UK Government #FollowTheScience? And will Universities?

🤔
2. #IndependentSAGE agrees with SAGE that, in Autumn in HE, “significant outbreaks are likely" that "could amplify local & national transmission"; that "this requires national oversight”, & that “asymptomatic transmission may make these harder to detect”.

3. Our report published yesterday maps, in detail, the overlap between SAGE and #IndependentSAGE's principles and recommendations, and is summarized below:

As #COVID19 cases are found to spread, #Melbourne (city of ~5 million) tries to contain them by going into #Lockdown.
(The interview features the idea of a dedicated #Quarantine building - that would actually help, I guess)...
"People acting as if the pandemic was over was 'not the answer, it is part of the problem' ".

"The virus had leaked from postcodes already under the stay-at-home orders to other parts of #Melbourne."
(and beyond, it is feared).
Due to #Melbourne's outbreak, neighbouring South Australia is about to completely close it's borders to #Victoria.

(Nearly) no exceptions. And those essential few who are allowed in, will have to wear facemasks the entire time...

Vorpommern-Greifswald district (where rejections of #Gütersloh residents took place, yesterday)
has specific rules:
"Those who return from international risk areas (out of Germany) or whose Corona-Warning App has alerted them, need to report to authorites"
kreis-vg.de Image
In fact, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Corona-ordinance really prohibits entry of people from international risk areas AND german risk areas as well.
It's just not prominently featured on their websites.

(Overlooked that myself, hence deleted earlier tweet)

People from #Gütersloh district may have to scrap all their holiday plans anyway...

An official #Lockdown is just being announced for the entire district.
