1. The Trump admin is quietly considering using powers granted to the Treasury Department under the Patriot Act to dramatically cut #Iran's last links to the global financial system, in a move likely intended to hobble #INSTEX, as @TylerCullis explains.

2. Back in 2011, the Obama admin used Section 311 powers to designate Iran as a “primary money laundering concern." But it never issued the "Final Rule" requiring banks to take onerous "special measures" in order to deal with Iran. Other sanctions on banks were deemed sufficient.
3. Now, the rule is back on the agenda. @TylerCullis warns that if the "Final Rule" is issued, "European banks that maintain accounts on behalf of Iranian financial institutions are likely to take steps to shutter such accounts so as to sustain their own accounts at US banks."

1/ #Iran announced it has exceeded the allowable limits of low-enriched uranium as outlined in the #IranNuclearDeal. It has threatened to escalate further next weekend.

What should happen next?
2/ The U.S. and the remaining parties to the #IranNuclearDeal should not overreact.

#Iran's breach is very limited and reversible.
3/ #Iran is not rushing toward a bomb.

If this were the case, we would see the Europeans, #Russia and #China begin activating the deal’s adjudication process and snapping back sanctions. They are not.

Now a shooting war with #Iran appears to have been avoided, at least for the weekend, it's vital we pause and ask ourselves the basic questions: What's the strategy? Is there even one? How did we get into this mess? And, how do we get out of it?

Time for a #geopolitics thread!
Right, so, here's the bottom line: The US has worked itself into a position whose likely outcomes are (a) war (b) internal regime change or (c) lasting damage to U.S. global leadership. I think we're heading for the latter. But first, I want to back up and review how we got here
For about 30 years, the U.S. & Iran maintained a cold, uncomfortable peace, generally content to hurl no more than invective at each other. Even in #Iraq, where #IRGC-backed militias attacked US forces, the two found their strategic interests aligned more often than not.
