#InternationalHumanRightsDay #AssangeCase

Good morning from inside the #RCJ. Firstly, to confirm that despite an electrical failure on his train journey & thanks to pre-5 am by Derek @JA_Defence, much-beloved @CraigMurrayOrg has made it in.
I will tweet here if I’m allowed.
1/ #InternationalHumanRightsDay #AssangeCase

A few journalists & I have made it to the door of the court room. We are waiting to be let in. It appears that the judgment may just be handed down and there may not be any discussion. The lawyers are not here yet. 40 mins to start

#Assange faces 175 years in a US supermax for revealing 100% true information. He will be tried under the Espionage Act which has no public interest defense & won’t be allowed First Amendment protections. This criminalises journalism

Now Dominic Raab protects Human Rights Act? No, this is rather a double act - Priti Patel wants to go as far as re-interpret prohibition of torture (to allow UK to deport even where you might face risk of torture). Raab says No to this, but wants change on e.g. privacy rights
2. Steve Barclay and Jacob Rees-Mogg however are supportive of Priti Patel's effort, @thetimes report! Her effort to "add [in UK legislation] a legal definition of Article 3 to prevent judges making “subjective” decisions on what conditions may be faced after deportation"...
3. Priti Patel wants the power to redefine the absolute prohibition of torture, in other words, in a way that suits her deportation policies - her plans fly in the face of, and completely undermine, international law.

This is coming to us on #InternationalHumanRightsDay.

This #InternationalHumanRightsDay let’s talk about a U.S. policy that throws hundreds of thousands of API, Black, Latinx and Arab immigrants into a game of immigration roulette every 6-to 18-months. A thread: 1/10
Here’s why we’re on #TheCUSPofJustice:

400K people in the U.S. with Temporary Protected Status (TPS)—an immigration status assigned to applicants from certain countries facing humanitarian crises. Don’t let the “temporary” name fool you. People have had TPS FOR DECADES. 2/10
El Salvador was the first country to receive TPS in 1991. Followed by Somalia. This means there have been people living in the U.S. with the so-called-temporary-status for close to thirty years. Currently there are 10 countries with TPS. 3/10 cdn.cfr.org/sites/default/…

THREAD:

This International Human Rights day I'm thinking about humanitarian crisis in #Yemen and the vote in the Senate yesterday to enable a leading driver of the violence in Yemen, the #UAE. #YemenCantWait #InternationalHumanRightsDay @AkbarSAhmed

huffpost.com/entry/trump-ua…
Last night, the #US Senate just said Trump can send $23 billion in sophisticated weapons to the #UAE, including #F35s, Reaper drones, and munitions. The UAE is a leading driver of violence in the #Yemen & have helped push millions to the brink of famine. #YemenCantWait
The #UAE has also been arming Al Qaeda affiliates and other militias in Yemen with US made weapons. The silver lining is that most Dems voted against and that Biden has the chance to block delivery of these deadly weapons in the new year. #YemenCantWait

Events like this may not permit us all to tell our stories for the dearth of time but it does reinforce our resolve & amplify what we each stand for as it culminate into one coming ground...the future of our children. #InternationalHumanRightsDay @EUinNigeria #EndImpunity
Since we can not agree on anything else without poking each other’s eyes out, we can as well agree that we owe it to all our children and the vulnerable in our society to leave them a better legacy and better society where they can all equally & equitably thrive.
The EU & other foreign envoys can’t fight for us even if they want to, they can only play the role of a catalyst by creating an opportunity such as this to showcase & recognize leading voices within the constellation of ailing clusters, with the hope of forging a collaboration.

On #InternationalHumanRightsDay2019 let me tell you a story of grit and persistence for Justice that has shaken me like never before.
1) Sachin Jaiswar was a 17 year old living in Dharavi. Father is a painter.
2) In July 2018 police picked him up for investigating a mobile theft+
3) Police had beaten him mercilessly to enquire about the theft.
4) He maintained he knew nothing about the mobile phone
5) Next day police left him, while coming home his health wasn't good.
6) Blood oozed out of his mouth, he fell unconscious while trying to eat food+
7) Immediately he was hospitalized, in few days he died
8) Post mortem report said, he died of leptospirosis.
9) Family is contesting this and say it was due to the Police torture
10) They wanted a fair investigation and FIR against the policemen who beat the boy to death +
