This week I was able to travel to 4 districts in #GilgitBaltistan to meet freelancers and individuals working at various private organizations. Internet issues are far more worrying than I knew previously.

Within the densely populated Gilgit city, there are a number of neighborhoods that don't even get signals of one of the major telecom operators that provide 3G/4G services. In areas of Sonikot, you have to get to the roof to catch signals.

The representatives at an SCO franchise in NLI Market were unable to explain the speed to expect for subscribing to a certain data package. They kept insisting, a separate 4G device that costs Rs. 3,500 can fix the issue. It was out of stock.

Zong announced to launch 3G and 4G services in GB from May 5 ,2018. After getting license from PTA to provide its services in Gilgit-Baltistan .

Their users are left with no option b/c SCO has been suing any other telecom company willing to provide better services (which are much needed rn btw). Now, the students of GB are protesting against SCO and requesting @pid_gov to provide this basic right to internet bc they are
Falling behind academically. Now i urge y'all to tweet/post about this to raise awareness and get govt to take action b/c most of our friends up north can't even send a WhatsApp text in times of online learning.

The first time I was introduced to the internet was in 2004 when #KADO started an internet cafe in #Hunza, charged Rs. 10 per hour to surf the web. It worked like a miracle.

Little did we know about this tech, an even bigger concern was electricity, still a pressing issue across #GilgitBaltistan. The UPS batteries and backup generators weren't enough so we waited for hours just to log in to the sweet Yahoo! Mail account.

A year later, went to Gilgit and found out the internet was quite slow compared to Hunza. It was totally the contrary to what I have been expecting. Another year later went to Abbottabad for further studies and the charm of a faster internet was back.
