COVID Update December 22: Yesterday I wrote a tweet thread about bottling up my own anger.

But I also have tons of hope. On my #inthebubble with Tony Fauci tomorrow am, you will see why. 1/
Yes one reason is science. Tony represents the reason you invest in science regardless of the administration and regardless of whether we are worried about taxes & deficits. 2/
Investing in science is an investment in each other. An investment in our future. And it cuts against all the excesses of capitalism. 3/

COVID Update December 21: 2020 has been filled with such a strong assortment of emotions, facts, and politics.

And I’ve tried the best I could to find & summarize the right facts in these threads. But there’s more going on that I haven’t captured. But I will try now. 1/
As a country it became clear to most of us at some point that you can’t get through a pandemic very well as a divided nation. That all the division that had been brewing for years was coming back to haunt us. 2/
That every bit of indifference to the plight of others, every time we didn’t do everything we could to make people less likely to suffer, every selfish instinct— were all coming bone to roost. And in the worst possible ways— with people’s lives. 3/

Morning update on COVID news.

Vaccine rollout
Senate package
New strain in UK
More data/California 1/
Vaccine rollout.

Trump Administration have problems counting how many Pfizer vaccines they have & where & when they go. Will fail to send committed amounts on time to states. 2/
Governors are annoyed & trying to be patient. Delay will be weeks not months from what I hear.

This sounds sloppy. But kinks are to be expected. Moderna vaccine begins to ship. 3/

VACCINE APPROVAL NEWS: The Pfizer vaccine was approved in the UK. Expect the Oxford/AZ to be approved next week in the UK.

This is significant for some obvious and not so obvious reasons. 1/
The obvious first.

This is one of the biggest wins for mankind & science in my lifetime certainly. 1.5 million people have died. That won’t be 3 million or 4 million. If we do it right, it won’t be 2 million. 2/
Second— for anyone who wonders whether US politics is playing a role in approval of these vaccines, this should be extremely reassuring. In fact, I hope this is case closed.

COVID Update December 1: Every month alive tried to give a preview of what’s ahead.

The best thing about December is that it will end 2020. 1/
The FDA will meet and approve both the Pfizer and Moderna drugs in a highly transparent way.

We will see data. We will see meeting notes. We will see side effects profiles. 2/
From everything we know these vaccines will begin saving lives immediately.

The first 20 million should go to health care workers.
The next 3 million to people in nursing homes.

Those will begin this month but are likely to be completed in January. 3/

COVID Update November 29: There’s this trite expression that it’s always darkest before the dawn.

I want to talk about the dark. And the dawn. 1/
This expression typically means— keep going, when it feels rough, muscle through, you may be at bottom. And I rather like this expression. For people with depression, they often describe things as being dark. 2/
And who they hell hasn’t been suffering through some depression?

I mean— we have it all: death, joblessness, Congress that’s abandoned us, Venezuela meddling in our elections (dead Venezuelans at that!), fear, Rudy Giuliani melting. 3/

COVID election eve update: I want to share a number of conversations & scenarios I’ve been having. 1/
First of all I don’t know a scientist, a civil servant, a public health official, or a public lab head that isn’t praying for a Biden victory. And that doesn’t mean there aren’t some out there, but I’m not just talking about Democrats. 2/
If I could have any endorsement in the world right now, it would be from @larrybrilliant.

Thank you

Thank you

Thanks to all the listeners of #inthebubble today we sent a check for $19,000 to Project Ayuda in the Central Valley of California.

centralvalleycf.org/project-ayuda/
Let me tell you why.

Project Ayuda offers disaster relief payments to undocumented residents, many of them farm workers & their families.

Make no mistake. They are in this country to pick our crops & grow our food that we all take for granted. And they are dying in record #s.
COVID is ravaging these areas. And now the orange skies and unhealthy air is too. The nature of the work is ungodly heat, backbreaking manual labor & poor living conditions.

And the Central Valley, CA among our country’s biggest hot spots.

COVID Update September 6: There’s a lot of Twitter mansplaining about herd immunity.

Here’s what it means. 1/
I actually think it means one of several things depending on who says it. 2/
1. The first thing it means is “This is too hard. I give up. We might as well just get it dear & get it over with.”

Tired of missing your football games? Aching to go to the BBQ? Believe in herd immunity. 3/

COVID Update September 6: This bug is beatable.

I talked to 3 lab directors, the FDA, 2 former FDA commish, 3 epis, 2 virologists & a senior White House scientist so I could give you a consensus on what we know. 1/
Much of the spread is highly highly clustered. Everyone who gets the flu is more or less evenly infectious. Here a small number of people are highly infectious. And there a small number of places where the virus is highly spreadable. 2/
Compared to other viruses, we would much much much rather not have asymptomatic spreaders and pre-symptomatic spread, but fortunately not everyone coming in contact is getting it. Its not the measles. 3/

BREAKING: Great news.

SalivaDirect received approval this morning from the @US_FDA.

This could be one the first major game changers in fighting the pandemic. Rarely am I this enthusiastic. Here’s why.

Follow if interested.
1. One reason? Saliva.

We already have it. We don’t need to export it from Italy or run out. We don’t need to stick something 4 inches up a kid’s nostril.

But that’s just the start.
2. The second reason is profit. Or lack thereof.

SalivaDirect is a protocol of how to do tests with whatever equipment you have as long as it gets approved by Yale (who developed the protocol).

COVID Update August 11: I was asked to write the memorial to the front line health care workers we lost by @guardian & @KHNews.

This is my tribute to what and who we’ve lost on the frontline.
I spent a long time scrolling their photos & stories before I knew what I wanted to write. I put the link at the bottom & encourage you to do the same.

I found it nearly impossible to do any sort of justice in just a few words but here goes:
“They chose not to hold their own children’s hands so they could hold ours. They intubated us and kept our ICU rooms germ-free. They brushed our teeth and switched our position so we could be more comfortable.

COVID Update August 12: The failure of Trump to respond to the crisis facing Americans is akin to not responding to an attack on Pearl Harbor or 9/11– accept with millions of Americans affected. 1/
STRIKE 1: Sending low income Americans to work during a pandemic without investing in testing first.

Dozens of bus drivers, hundreds of nurses, hundreds and thousands of meat packing workers & farm laborers are already dead.

And we’re still doing it. 2/
STRIKE 2: The House passed a bill to continue the moratorium on evictions. The Senate & the President, who was in charge of the negotiation, let it expire. 3/

COVID Update August 9: It’s time to talk about testing again.

Everyone thinks we are doing it badly and we are. Until we do we are not going to be close to back to normal. 1/
First of all we need tests for 3 different purposes.

-Confirming people are sick
-Testkng wear the outbreak goes
-Using tests to allow entry into buildings, schools & activities 2/
Tests to confirm people with symptoms are sick need to be quick turnaround time. We’re currently not doing that.

The only way there is to reduce cases and infection levels. The last 3 months have made it impossible. 3/

Three toolkits to help you and your family through the pandemic.

Listen to 3 #inthebubble and you will be more prepared. What are they?

1. What is safe and not safe to do? (Including the personal stuff)
2. What is everything you need to know about a vaccine?
3. How do you talk about masks and social distancing with people who disagree?

COVID Update July 31: We have spent months in the US being perfect hosts to the virus while most of the world has flattened it.

What will change in August? 1/
I will call it at the end but first focus on key areas:

-Hot spots
-Kids/schools
-Testing
-Scientific learning
-Politics

2/
Hot spots: Southern/SW cities are now going through a large amount of deaths. These losses stem from June activity & 4 factor contribute to them:
-Opening bars in June
-Hot spots along the border/minority communities
-Late/never to NPIs like masks
-No testing increased spread 3/

COVID Update June 28: August will be another twist in the road. That comes tomorrow.

But I need to do something first. I’m reminded many people follow me for COVID info so I want to call out & atone for my mistakes. 1/
Each month at the end of the month, I do something which lacks any sort of judgment: tweet out what is likely to happen over the next month. 2/
This whole crisis has suffered from a lack of accountability so I want to start with myself & where I’ve been right & wrong. 3/

COVID Update July 27: Someone you know compare COVID-19 to other illnesses?

Want to see how COVID falls in relationship to other conditions? 1/
There are 4 things to know:

How you get it
How serious is it
How it relates to other conditions
What happens when you’ve had it

2/
You hear a lot of people comparing COVID-19 to the flu or car accidents. Some of them are what I call “Twitter experts.”

These are people presumably aiming to make the point that we should not let the presence of COVID -19 change our way of life. 3/

COVID Update July 25: Right now in this crisis, good or bad is less important than early or late.

If saving lives is important to your mayor & governor, they need to be early to action. 1/
Acting to close bars & require masks BEFORE hospital beds fill is a bit like wearing a condom. It’s more effective before the act.

2/
(Don’t be concerned. I won’t be taking that analogy any further.) 3/

I want to give a HUGE thank you as we announce today the donation of $14,000 to @NCovid19relief on behalf of #inthebubble listeners.

I don’t think they are aware yet so I hope they see this. We are thrilled to honor & support their vital work.

navajohopisolidarity.org
This volunteer group @NCovid19relief is bringing supplies, including WATER, to residents & keeping them safe.

They are at extremely high risk & this group is amazing for what they do.
My son Zach & I donate all the proceeds that come to us. When more people listen, more money comes in. Please get your friends to listen.

Last month we donated $10,000 to @WCKitchen.

COVID Update July 12: Just because things will get worse before they get better doesn’t mean they won’t get better.

They will! But let’s take it in order. 1/
Three things are going to happen next.

-In phase 2 states (AZ, FL, TX, Southern CA) the death rate is going to start moving up the back half of July
-Phase 3/4 states (the rest) will begin to follow the path
-Phase 1 (NE) will have a constant vigilence for the Fall Wave 2

2/
Observing what’s happened in AZ, FL, TX is instructive.

Even though with COVID-19, one thing ALWAYS leads to the next, at each stop, there was strong denial that the next step would happen. 3/

COVID Update June 30: What does the Congress owe us?

Time for them to support the American public through chaos. And the virus. 1/
The American public need these 4 things from the Congress.

The truth
Sustained financial support
Public health commitment for states
Checks & balances please

2/
The public is weary of the false promises, patting the master on the back, changing stories, outright lies, bad medicines, and reluctant admissions out of the White House.

People want to know what’s going on, for how long & what they should do. 3/
