The Society of Jesus (known as Jesuits), a religious order in the Catholic Church, was founded by Ignatius of Loyola and approved by the Pope in 1540. In the backdrop of the Protestant Reformation, the Jesuits were instrumental in the Counter-Reformation efforts in Europe.
The #Jesuit order arrived in #PH from Mexico in 1581 led by their Superior, Antonio Sedeño. From his group's pioneering efforts, Jesuit mission stations & schools were established. Sedeño founded the Universidad de San Ignacio in #Intramuros in 1590.

Since the end of the Galleon trade in 1815, #PH economy under colonial administration was forced to diversify. While there were gains in this shift, it caused disparities among wage-earners in colonial Philippines, w/ its effects being felt until 1880s.

Founded in the year 1216 in France by Dominic of Osma (St. Dominic), the Dominicans (known as the Order of Preachers, or OP) were some of the leading scholars of Europe's Middle Ages. After the Augustinians, Franciscans, and Jesuits, they arrived in #PH #onthisday in 1587. ImageImage

Arellano became instructor at the UST teaching Civil Law. Soon, he served as member ("regidor") of the council of the City of Manila (#Intramuros) from 1887 to 1889. He was soon appointed by the colonial gov as Magistrado Suplente of the Audiencia Territorial de Manila.

Born to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro, a tailor & a housewife, Andres was born to a poor family, & eldest of his siblings—Ciriaco, Procopio, Espiridiona, Troadio, & Maxima. Upon the early death of their parents, Andres stood as breadwinner for the family.
First selling canes and paper fans, & juggling several jobs, Andres Bonifacio was employed as clerk & liaison for the British company Fleming & Co in Manila. He eventually became an agent of the company, but soon decided to switch to the German company, Fressel & Co.

#TodayinHistory in 1645, Colegio de Santo Tomas was elevated to university status by virtue of Pope Innocent X's In Supreminenti. The institution therefore became Universidad de Santo Tomas (@UST1611official). It added "pontifical university" on its title. THREAD.
In 1611, the institution was official founded upon Spanish King Philip II's granting of its Document of Foundation. Years prior, Domingo de Salazar, Miguel de Benavides, and other pioneering Dominicans worked to est. the learning institution.
Its first campus was in #Intramuros, beside the original Santo Domingo Church in the Walled City. A second campus, a larger one, was built in Sampaloc, #Manila. During #WWII, the Intramuros campus was destroyed, while the Sampaloc campus survived.

Back in 1571, it was Lakandula of Tondo who first welcomed the Spaniards, on behalf of Raja Matanda & his heir Soliman of Manila. Lakandula became the mediator, leading to the eventual acceptance of Spanish sovereignty.
This led to the founding of the Spanish colonial city on the site of Soliman's burnt down settlement, #Intramuros (Manila) on 24 June 1571, known now as "Araw ng Maynila."

Born on 19 March 1731, in Caniogan, Santa, in Ilocos Sur, she was raised by Fray Tomas Millan, assured of ample education & religion. At 20 yrs old, she was forced to be married to a wealthy man who died 3 years after, leaving her w/ his wealth.
A widow that she was, she got acquainted w/ Diego Silang, a courier of the Spanish gov, who wooed her for 5 yrs until they married in 1757. Diego Silang's travels across the regions opened his eyes to the unfair taxation, & forced labor on Filipinos.

Representation, w/c the Spanish colonial gov denied Filipinos, was vital. Elections were held & on 1 August 1898, elected mayors of liberated towns ratified the Proclamation of Independence of 12 June 1898. At the time, the capital of the revolutionary gov was #Bacoor #Cavite.

In May 1898, with the Americans promising Aguinaldo aid to relaunch the #PH Revolution against Spain, Filipino forces have been gaining ground, while the Americans battled the Spanish forces at sea.
The proclamation of #PH independence was declared on 12 June 1898 at Kawit, Cavite. The fledgling Filipino government set out to make itself more representative of the liberated towns, thanks to the initiative of Apolinario Mabini.

Previously, the U.S. Asiatic Squadron of Admiral George Dewey reached out to Emilio Aguinaldo, who was exiled in Hong Kong, to lead the resumption of the #PH Revolution against Spain, as the American fleet engaged the Spanish Navy docked in Cavite.
On 1 May 1898, the U.S. Asiatic Squadron decimated the Spanish navy in Cavite, sinking 8 Spanish ships, leading to the Spanish fleet's surrender. From then on, Americans began amassing forces in Manila Bay from San Francisco almost unimpeded.

Context: He began his formal schooling in Spain at the young age of 7, but went back to Manila to pursue his Bachelor of Arts in 1880. He studied at the Universidad Central de Madrid (now @unicomplutense) in 1884 & gained his Licentiate in Jurisprudence.
His passion with the rule of law was seen in his graduate thesis, "Los efectos jurídicos de la Ignorancia de Derecho" (The legal effects of the ignorance of the law) on which Del Pan was conferred the Doctorate in Jurisprudence.
