#CapitolHill is on lockdown. This is a breaking news situation and a VERY important time to slow down, take a breath and be diligent about how you find reliable information and get the facts on social media. (THREAD)
STEP 1: Check your emotions. This is a highly volatile situation and emotionally charged moment. It's crucial that you take a step back and make sure your emotions are not clouding your judgment as you try to figure out what is going on.
These are the moments that bad actors thrive on -- when you are not thinking straight and just click share on anything you see. This is when you really need to PAUSE. Go for a walk if you need to. This is super important.

After that thread about @Wayfair 👇, we received tons of replies from people that felt our reporting wasn’t as thorough as it could have been, so we did some more research to get to the bottom of it.
FYI this is @mediawise editorial director @kriswellesley chiming in here. I think it’s important that we figure out whether the children’s names we’re constantly seeing associated with this conspiracy are in fact missing. So here we go...
Yaritza Castro, Samara Duplessis, Cameron Dziedzic, Mary Durrett, Kylah Coleman & Samiyah Mumin are all allegedly missing and connected to Wayfair because their names were used in a pillow or cabinet product listing. Image

You’ve probably seen a lot of talk about @Wayfair and it’s alleged use of storage cabinets as a means for child trafficking, including this one.👇🏾 So we decided to look into it...
First, we searched “Wayfair and child trafficking” in Google. The only article we found was from @Newsweek, which states that the claim originated on a Conspiracy subreddit. newsweek.com/wayfair-child-… #Wayfair
As the theory gained traction online, many Twitter users claimed that searching the stock keeping unit number (SKU) for each Wayfair product on a Russian search engine would bring up photos of children. Newsweek reported that is not the case.

Follower @SJamesC7 got our eyes on this tweet claiming that regions across the U.S. have been placed under martial law. But this actually isn’t true!
It is true that there have been protests following #GeorgeFloyd’s death in every single US state. And according to this chart from Forbes, 23 states have the National Guard deployed. forbes.com/sites/niallmcc… Image
However, martial law has NOT been enacted. As @PolitFact says here, martial law is used when civil forces are overwhelmed. That has not happened yet.

Hey @rachelzegler , we’ve noticed there’s been a lot of talk around @tiktok and it’s blocking of the #blacklivesmatter and #GeorgeFloyd hashtag, so we decided to look into it...
It’s always best to go to the root of the problem. We went over to @tiktok and decided to take a look. Here’s a video of us making a Tik Tok. The hashtag alongside the view count is listed.”
Another twitter user shared a screenshot that had the views for these hashtags at 0, which isn’t the case.

Is that an explosion in D.C or the scene out of a movie? Should I trust the account spreading news about looting? As the #blacklivesmatter and #GeorgeFloydProtests continues, you’re going to see a lot of #misinformation online. Here’s how to make sure you don’t share it:
We’re cracking open (virtually) the Verification Handbook for Disinformation and Media Manipulation, an EXCELLENT resource for fact-checking spearheaded by @CraigSilverman (with a bunch of awesome contributors), and bringing you some tips for verifying posts. Image
1. Make sure you’re looking at an authentic account. It could be a fake account or even a bot designed to spread #misinformation. Do another reverse image search 🔎 on the account’s profile image to see if it has been used before under a different name. ImageImage

First thing’s first. Who is behind the information? It’s hard to say who’s behind the Physics and Astronomy Zone account. We went straight to the site - NO byline & NO helpful info on the site 🚩🚩🚩.
The article hyperlinked just one source...a Spanish site🤔. We translated the article and learned — it was @earthwatch_org who declared the bee as the most important species on the Earth.
