A tiny subset of terrible things that have happened at #Rikers Island #Jail in #NewYorkCity: a primer for upper middle class white people. If you don't know these stories, you are not doing your job as a human.
I'm tweeting about #jails and #bail because (real, substantive) #bailreform is good for society and we need more of it. And I'm tweeting for upper middle class white people because we have a lot of power/positionality, and yet tend to be least knowledgeable about the issues.
Upper middle class white people: I beg you, I plead with you, to educate yourself on these critical criminal justice topics which affect minoritized people most directly, and yet which also affect ALL of society.

#TAX! Here's Davos' #WorldEconomicForum again, suggesting that we should tax meat eaters... 'like smokers' ?!?! What a #GreatReset that'll be! 😬

The idea is also spread by C. Figueres, a main driving force behind the Paris climate agreement & member of the Board of.... #WRI 🤔 The meat tax idea is further amplified by #EAT member Springmann who wrote a specific study on it: journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…

Women & girls in US #prisons & #jails are provided a limited number of tampons or pads monthly. The quality is so poor, women end up making their own, since products in commissaries are priced above retail & people in prison earn an average $1/day. >thread motherjones.com/crime-justice/…
AZ charges prisoners $4 to see a doctor & requires women get a dr's note before providing them more than the basic limit of pads or tampons.

NC prisoners pay $5 to see the nurse before getting approval to see the doctor for $5 more.

Prisoners earn an average $1/day.
“When I’m making 9 cents [an hour] after tax, you really got to think if I want to put my whole month’s income into hopefully being approved for extra pads, if they believe I deserve them,” Adrienne Kitcheyan told AZ lawmakers (Mother Jones 2/2019).

Let’s talk about the proverbial elephant in the room RE #CompassionateRelease of persons incarcerated in #prisons in the midst of #COVID19. A [long] thread with thanks to @briewsf @DrNovisky @GeriPowerMD 1/21
While a partnership between @FAMMFoundation @NACDL @WashLaw4CR is tackling petitions in the @OfficialFBOP Why don’t we see governors and other leadership extending release to many of the #vulnerable housed in state #prisons? 2/21
By #vulnerable, I mean those persons who meet #CDC guidelines for greatest risk of serious illness due to #COVID19 -- persons over 65 (#olderadults), those with #chronichealth problems including severe #asthma #liverdisease or are #immunocompromised (#hepatitis) 3/21

This is the type of absolute denial of facts and reality occupying the #MAGA crown. There is no where in America, not one state, where the average gas price is not higher, generally by between 40-50 cents, according to the AAA, not known for faking basic data for partisanship.
The link to where you can see this for yourself is provided. I just looked at all fifty states. No state has longer cost gas today than a year ago. And for this particular statement to be true, the cost would actually need to be approx $1.30-$1.50 cheaper than current averages.
For many places, that would mean it being down by almost 50% or more from the average price. Wherever this half of gas sale is, I’d love to know. So there are two options here: this person lives in the one place in America where gas prices are at $1.75 or so, or they are wrong.
