@HealthZA's Nicholas Crisp says no, not until we get our #JandJ jabs (or additional Pfizer/other brands). Why? Otherwise we run the risk of using up the jabs before the next #Pfizer batch arrives, and will have to stop and start.

[Thread] 1. When will we hear if Aspen can release SA’s #JandJ jabs from their Gqebera plant and why can’t the country itself just give the go ahead? @healthza’s Nicholas Crisp says the #FDA has told him they’ll make an announcement on Fri (tomorrow).

1. #CyrilRampahosa: 67% of health workers have been vaccinated. IN total: 960 000 people in SA have received 1 #COVID vaccination dose (either #Pfizer or #JandJ). Over the next days, we would have administered 1 vaccination dose to more than 1-million of the most vulnerable SAs.

3. #CyrilRampahosa: SA's #JandJ jabs have been delayed because of a lack of adherence to proper standards at a US factory. We're waiting for these issues to be resolved before our J&J jabs can be released from Aspen in EC. We are in constant contact with the relevant authorities.

2. The number of people getting their 1st #Pfizer dose today = 38 134. That means in one day (Wed) we vaccinated as many people as in the previous two days (Mon + Tu = 39 371), so we're picking up speed.
3. The total number of #Sisonke #CovidVaccinations has increased by 897 (from 479 768 to 480 665), probably because of final vaccination data that was coming in after the trial had ended.

3. Can a provider ask you to pay for the R70 #CovidVacine administration fee at the counter? NO. They have to bill your medical aid (if you're insured) or the government (if you're not insured) directly.
[Thread] 1. Why did the #Sisonke trial researchers broaden the definition of #HealthWorkers who can get vaccinated and are people using it to jump the queue (so are non-health workers queuing up to get vaccinated)?

3. Because #Sisonke doses can only be used for the trial, leftover doses can't be given to Phase 1B (#HealthWorkers not covered by Sisonke) or Phase 2 (people of 60+) of the roll-out. Sisonke either has to use the doses/return leftover ones.

[Thread] 1. VACCINE ROLL-OUT UPDATE from the Western Cape: Keith Cloete, the head of the WC health department says the province today received just over 30 000 doses of the 1st batch of (325 260) Pfizer #CovidVaccines that arrived in SA on May 2.
2. .@WestCapeHealth expects to receive #JandJ jabs from May 28. Deliveries of both #Pfizer + J&J will be made each week (the nr of doses will increase with time — in line with national deliveries: SA will get 300 000 Pfizer doses each week in May and 600 000+ each week in June).
3. What will the 30 000 #Pfizer jabs in the WC be used for? To vaccinate #HealthWorkers not covered by the Sisonke trial and people of 60+ in old-age homes. So phase 2 (people of 60+) will start off in old-age homes, not at individual sites. When? Monday, 17 May.

[Thread]. 1. This morning @ZweliMkhize announced that the Sisonke trial, which uses #JohnsonandJohnson’s #COVID19 jab, will resume on Wednesday. So what happens now?
2. Up until now, the Sisonke trial has vaccinated about 300 000 #HealthWorkers. @SAHPRA1 paused the trial in April, after the FDA/CDC in the US temporarily halted its #JandJ roll-out due to the occurrence of 8 rare blood clotting disorders among about 7 million vaccinated people.

2/ Their diligence will analyze the cases of 6 U.S. women who developed very rare blood clots after receiving the J&J vaccine. Nearly seven million people have received this vaccine to-date in the U.S.
3/ Clinical notes:
All 6 events happened in women ages 18-48. All happened within three weeks post-vaccination. The pause is specific to the #JohnsonandJohnson vaccine, & not the #Pfizer & #Moderna vaccines.
