THREAD: Democracy won in Wisconsin tonight. The GOP thought they had this election fully stolen. Trump leaned in personally. But voters, who don't like being suppressed, rose up. Organizers worked magic. Here's the story. (Also: donate! wisdems.org/spring)
Rewind a few months, and the SCOWIS race looked unimaginably different.

The GOP had one huge advantage: incumbency. Scott Walker appointed Dan Kelly to fill a vacancy. Incumbent judges in Wisconsin usually win. On our side? A primary. We wouldn't know our candidate until Feb 18.
Meanwhile, progressives had some structural advantages as well. For one, everyone was sure the Democratic presidential campaign would be competitive. People thought four—maybe six!—Democrats would be crisscrossing Wisconsin before April 7, driving up Dem turnout.

If you listened to The Daily today, you got a good sense of the power dynamics in the fight over Wisconsin's election—but there's a central thing you didn't hear much about: the huge-stakes state Supreme Court race, Jill Karofsky (good) vs Dan Kelly (bad).

Jill Karofsky has spent her life working to advance equal justice for all. She was a domestic violence special prosecutor. Ran the statewide office of crime victim services. Has been decorated and honored as a judge. Thinks and cares deeply about civil rights. #JillForJustice
Dan Kelly is a GOP activist lawyer. He defended Scott Walker in corruption trials, and defended Wisconsin's GOP-gerrymandered maps in court. Walker thanked him by appointing him Justice to fill a vacancy, despite no prior judicial experience. It's turned out exactly as you think:

Here's where I turned in my absentee ballot today: the book return slot at the Madison Public Library downtown, as a brave pollworker in a plexiglass face shield and surgical mask stood by to help. Proud to vote for @judgekarofsky #JillForJustice
I wore my homemade face mask (thanks, mom!) and the poll worker used a clorox wipe to hold open the book return slot so that I wouldn't have to touch it as I pushed in my absentee envelope. #JillForJustice
This is not how democracy is supposed to work.

I'm grateful to the team organizing the Democratic Convention for undertaking the enormous work of postponing the Milwaukee convention, and their ongoing commitment to making it safe, successful, and Wisconsin-y. Wish the GOP state legislature would do the same with our election.
When you vote, or whenever you tweet about Wisconsin's election, make sure to support @judgekarofsky. #JillforJustice! And read about the stakes in this race here:

BUT: this means that when purge case is appealed State Supreme Court, Trump-endorsed/Walker-appointed Dan Kelly can cast tie-breaking vote to purge the voters—UNLESS, if timing works, we beat him on April 7.

Vote Jill Karofsky!

Last year, while I was running for @WisDems chair, I knocked on doors for Lisa Neubauer, who was running for Supreme Court to defeat a similar GOP operative. She was ahead. But the GOP flooded in $1.4m in dark money in the final week and won by 0.4%. This time, we’ll be ready.
