Today’s indictment doesn’t do nearly enough to hold the officers accountable for Breonna Taylor’s killing—and it doesn’t come close to providing her family with the justice they deserve.

This indictment is proof that we need to immediately pass the #JusticeInPolicingAct.
I know so many of us are angry & heartbroken over this. Black lives *do* matter.

We must use our power at the ballot box, because the Attorney General who declared today that the shooting of Breonna Taylor was a justified use of deadly force derives his power FROM VOTERS.
If we organize—if we harness our fury to stay energized—we CAN keep individuals out of power who turn a blind eye to violent acts of police misconduct.

#JusticeForBreonnaTaylor. Now.

Two years ago we learned about the death by suicide of Marco Antonio Muñoz, a father whose child was forcibly ripped out of his arms by Border Patrol agents in the early days of Trump's family separation policy.

Last week a court threw out most of his claims for relief. /1
This article paints a clear picture about how judicially-created immunity doctrines and statutory exemptions make it nearly impossible for a person (or their surviving relatives) to get justice. /2 themonitor.com/2020/07/03/jud…
Muñoz sued the US, because it was the official government policy of separating families like his that led to his death.

The claim was dismissed b/c the family separation policy and the separation itself were acts of discretion.

Dismissed because the US *chose* to do this. /3

I’m thinking of leaders in our community who have marched against racism and police brutality many times throughout their lives, and the pain and exhaustion they expressed to me in feeling those calls have gone unheard.

As leaders, it’s our job to hear people on the ground.
The House's passage of the George Floyd #JusticeinPolicingAct is a significant step forward in changing the culture of policing, and improving the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
While this bill marks the first comprehensive policing reform legislation to pass the U.S. House, it by no means represents the end of our work to address racism and inequality.

I hope that the Senate meets the moment and that we get to negotiating meaningful reform into law.

This week, I was proud to cosponsor the #JusticeInPolicingAct. This is the most far reaching attempt in decades to reform policing in America and to rebuild trust between police and the communities they are sworn to protect. It is long overdue.
Our bill would:

- Ban racial profiling
- Ban chokeholds & require body cams
- Empower the Justice Department to investigate & correct police misconduct
- Make it easier to hold abusive officers accountable, and, if they're fired, to keep them from getting rehired elsewhere.
The bill places strict limits on transfers of military equipment to law enforcement. I want local cops look like cops, not like the 82nd Airborne parachuting into a war zone. I will also fight for additional safeguards against enlisting the military to police dissent.

Today, #GeorgetownLaw Professor Paul Butler is testifying at @HouseJudiciary's hearing on the #JusticeinPolicingAct.

"The main problem is not bad apple cops. Officers have difficult jobs & many serve with honor and valor. Still almost every objective investigation of a police department finds that police as policy treat African Americans with contempt,” @LawProfButler to @HouseJudiciary.(3/10)

Congress can no longer be a bystander to the racism & police brutality that is endemic in our country. I’m proud to join @SenKamalaHarris & @SenBooker in introducing the #JusticeInPolicingAct. Legislation that will start to create greater accountability & transparency.
More than better training & tough screening, this legislation will ban choke holds & require intervention to stop excessive force by fellow officers.
This weekend I heard protesters chanting “no lives matter, until Black Lives Matter.” They are right. I won’t stop fighting until justice & actively anti-racist polices are achieved.

The Justice in Policing Act establishes a Bold transformative vision of Policing in America. Never again should the world be subjected to witnessing what we saw on the streets in Minnesota. The slow murder of an individual by a uniformed police officer.
The world is witnessing the birth of a new movement in our country. This movement has now spread to many nations around the world, with thousands marching to register their horror at hearing the cry “I can’t breathe.”
People marching to demand not just change but transformative change that ends police brutality, that ends racial profiling and ends the practice of denying Americans the ability to sue when they have been injured, that denies local jurisdictions the power to fire or prosecute.
