We managed 6 reservoirs in the Chalakudy river with close co-ordination with TN PWD this August first week & September very heavy rainfall.

Environmental and River Protection Groups blasted us! for WHAT?

Is it for prudent management w/o flooding the river?

#KeralaRains2020
The very same people created panic in public about predicting a doomsday & repeat of 2018 floods when our reservoirs had some carry over storages before beginning summer due to less utilisation due to COVID19.

Many people called me over phone as they lost sleep over these hype!
First of all these environment groups has lots of agenda, they were only blaming KSEB's Poringalkuthu and Kerala Sholayar dams in Chalakudy basin.

Totally silent about TN Sholayar, Parambikulam, Tunacadavu & Peruvarippllom dams of TN in the same basin.

selective amnesia?

Pamba river gets heavy rainfall & people should be CAUTIOUS, as the reservoirs in this basin can hardly intercept 10% of catchment area.

There is only Kakki reservoir with 446.5 MCM & Pamba with 31.15 MCM are the only storages here.

Rest are micro storages #KeralaRains2020

Storage position of Major 5 reservoirs of KSEBL, which stores 92% of total storage of our 18 reservoirs.

Idukki - 75.6%
Idamalayar - 78.42%
Kakki - 75.03%
Banasurasagar - 96.95% and spilling
Sholayar - 96.74% and spilling

#KeralaRains2020
We have 6 small reservoirs whose capacity is between 30.3 MCM to 54.38 MCM, in that 3-4 always spill at every monsoon season. Total storage 7% of the total storage.

Spilling reservoirs

Poringalkuthu (Thrissur) and Ponmudi (Idukki) are now spilling.
We have 7 minor reservoirs, which are having storages between 0.71 MCM to 7.79 MCM. Most of these reservoirs need a day's heavy rainfall needed to spill even if they are empty & their storage is 0.74% of total storage

*Spilling*

Kundala, Kallarkutty, Lower Periyar & Moozhiyar

Kerala's biggest daily Manorama reports about the prudent dam operations adopted by KSEBL in Pamba reservoir.

Once in a while we get some flowers, as most of the time media throw brickbats! #KeralaRains2020 Image
In 2018 my observations were from sidelines & I was not part of reservoir management. Then responsibility was advising Govt on interstate waters as I was Special Officer for that.

Back now in direct advisory role in dam operations for KSEBL as member of Expert Advisory Group.
I stepped in to defend dam managers, most of them are my colleagues from the same batch, when people/media/politicians w/o understanding nuances of extreme flood events throwing brickbats at the dam managers.

So many of my friends here thought my views are political & trolled

TN Sholayar reservoir on upper reaches of Chalakudy River full and discharging through saddle spillway to Parambikulam reservoir, which have 30% space

Masonry spillway to Kerala Sholayar is stopped at today 8 AM, which also has 37% space.

#KeralaRains2020
Spill through Tunacadavu is so negligible amount to 2-3 cumecs and TN diverts water from there through contour canal.

To get a perspective, the discharge through Chalakudy river at Poringalkuthu downstream is around 491 cumecs & further down at Arangali is around 954 cumecs.
Yesterday Kerala & TN engineers after a through deliberations, taken a decision to divert a part of flood waters from Lower Nirar to Idamalayar, as it has space rather divert it to TNS and from there to KS. Thus postponed KS spilling at least till this spell upto 10th.

Idukki - 53.38%
Idamalayar - 47.38%
Kakki - 52%
Banasurasagar - 65.1%

Small reservoirs which are spilling.

1. Poringalkuthu - Thrissur
2. Kuttiyadi - Kozhukode
3. Ponmudi - Idukki
4. Kallarkutty - Idukki
5. Lower Periyar - Idukki
6. Moozhiyar- Pathanamthitta

First 3, has only around 30 MCM capacity & rest <10MCM.

All above spill every season
Link to the debate on 6th August about the flood situation in Mathrubhumi News Channel, which I participated.

This is in Malayalam, some facts about our floods are discussed here.
