Research suggests that these changes in cognitive function (#brain fog, poor memory, mood, and focus) may be accompanied by dysfunction in #brain energy metabolism that can be treated with #metabolic therapies. (1/17)
Cognitive dysfunction can arise when the brain's energy supply is disrupted. It's called brain hypometabolism. (2/17)
Head traumas and concussions in sports or accidents are associated with such changes and can cause behavioral changes and memory loss in adults. But you don't need a history of head injury for cognitive decline to occur. (3/17)

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a crucial defense mechanism for the brain, regulating the exchange of molecules between the bloodstream and the brain. When the BBB is disrupted, it can have severe consequences for brain health. (1/12)
Alzheimer's disease is one example of a condition that is exacerbated by BBB disruption. When the BBB is compromised, amyloid beta-peptide deposits can accumulate, leading to #inflammation and disruption of neuronal function. (2/12)
A disrupted BBB in #Alzheimers means astrocyte and microglia inflammation, disruption of synaptic transmission, and myelin destruction. (3/12)

We need to talk about the role of GABA in mental illness and neurological disorders. And then I am going to explain to you why ketones can help regulate this neurotransmitter. 🧵 (1/21)
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, and it plays a critical role in regulating neuronal excitability and maintaining the balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition. (2/21)
GABAergic dysfunction has been implicated in a wide range of psychiatric and neurological disorders, including #anxiety disorders, #depression, #epilepsy, #schizophrenia, and #autism spectrum disorders. (3/21)

I want you to know that the ketone body Acetoacetate is a powerful gene-signaling molecule. (1/14)
Acetoacetate has been shown to inhibit histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity in the brain, leading to increased histone acetylation and altered gene expression. (2/14)
Acetoacetate has been shown to inhibit HDAC activity, leading to increased histone acetylation and altered gene expression. This affects the expression of genes involved in synaptic plasticity and cognitive function in the brain. (3/14)

Medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, can affect how microglia and astrocytes produce inflammatory molecules. 🧵 (1/19)
Interleukin 8, or IL-8, is a molecule that causes inflammation in the body. It is produced by immune cells in the brain called macrophages, microglia, and astrocytes. (2/19)
IL-8 can either help or hurt the body's response to inflammation, depending on how much is present. IL-8 is complicated. It can have neuroprotective or neurotoxic roles. (3/19)

The struggling brain is already trying to shift to ketones for fuel. (1/4)
"The bioenergetic system of the brain is compromised early in the progression of AD and is evident during the prodromal (preclinical) stage of the disease. (2/4)
Glucose hypometabolism and a compensatory shift to an alternative fuel substrate, ketone bodies, have been established as a metabolic phenotype characteristic of the AD brain in both clinical and preclinical studies." (3/4) doi.org/10.1016/j.ebio…

Some of you who are on a ketogenic diet may not feel very well after your protein shake, especially whey protein. (1/5)
But it's not necessarily because you are having a reaction to dairy. More likely, it's the amino acid profile and amount. (2/5)
Leucine, alanine, cysteine, glycine, arginine, serine, and proline are ketogenic amino acids that can affect serum glucose concentration and insulin sensitivity. (3/5)

Apparently, some of you consider yourself experts on cancer treatment but don't have any idea about up-and-coming data on the use of a #ketoenic diet as an adjunct for #cancer treatments. (1/9)
This thread holds some links to researchers talking about using ketogenic diets as an adjunct treatment for some cancers. People way smarter than me about the subject, and quite frankly probably better educated than you on the topic. 🤷 (2/9)
I don't want you all discouraging someone from asking their oncologist about it when it could be instrumental in saving their life or quality of life. That's not cool. Some of you need to check yourselves. #ethics (3/9)

The Unique Regulation of Glucose and Ketosis in the Brain 🧵(1/4)
Regulatory controls are tighter in the brain than in the periphery. Glucose and glycogen regulation happens in the glia in the brain. #glia (2/4)
Ketosis can take 24-36 hours to achieve in the periphery, but the brain goes into ketosis every night. Glial glycogen stores are depleted within 6-8 hours. #ketones (3/4)

Greater evidence supports metabolic dysfunction as a likely root of bipolar illness. 🧵 #bipolar #mood #metabolicpsychiatry #inflammation #ketones
A low carbohydrate ketogenic diet mimics the mechanisms of mood stabilizers.
A ketogenic diet may repair or bypass metabolism deficits, decrease inflammation and regulate mood.

MCT Oil #supplementation improves cognitive performance in healthy young adults in a randomized, single blind, placebo controlled trial, published in 2020 and done in the UK. Image
Participants were divided into three groups and supplemented with placebo, 12 g, or 18 g MCT/day for 4 weeks in the form of gels.
Dosage was gradually increased by 6 g per week in the first 3 weeks.
Participants were tested once a week and after 2-3 weeks of supplementation, the MCT oil groups showed significantly improved performance in various cognitive tests compared to the placebo group.

Stunning new finding: #linoleic acid inhibits #SARSCoV2 viral replication!

Thanks to @DorissLoh (your essential Melatonin Connection) for this great find. Follow her.

@DrDan20000
Linoleic acid is a fatty acid distributed widely in foods, especially nuts, seeds and vegetable oils.

Pubmed link:
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36417532/

The authors write that "Our results [set] the stage for [free fatty acid]-based antiviral strategies to overcome COVID-19."
Totally Cool!

Now: I will set the stage in more detail, which you might find helpful.

Remember that your doctor, and the public health "authorities", and the #zerocovid-ians, will NEVER provide this detail or any other relevant practical help to individuals like you and me.

Does the ketogenic diet impair endurance training adaptations?

A thread 🧵👇

#keto #ketones #lowcarb Image
The ketogenic diet is a very low carb, high fat diet, that claims to improve exercise performance by increasing the use of fat (fat oxidation) during exercise.

2/ Image
This study investigated the effect of 3 different diets during an intensive training period on training adaptations in elite race walkers.
