1/ I’ve been noticing a ubiquitous technique recently upon which I have seen little commented. “Punchable face”, #killallmen, “Open Borders”, “Tax is Theft”, “Believe Women”, “Free markets”, “Free Speech” and uptalking are examples. I want to explain here what I see linking them.
2/ The technique involves bundling an attacking position and a retreating position where the retreat is low cost and reasonable while the attack is wildly simplistic, irresponsible and generally too expensive to maintain. The attack is frequently literal & the retreat figurative.
3/ As @ezraklein pointed out for the attack position #KillAllMen dripping with sexism & misandry, the retreat position is “it would be nice if the world sucked less for women”. Likewise “Open Borders” can collapse all the way down to “I don’t want to see immigrants scapegoated”.

The steps necessary to build and maintain healthy relationships is completely thrown out the window when it comes to maintaining good relationships in a political context.

This is perhaps most obvious when we see how the extreme left & right talk about race relations.
Consider this incredible advice on self-mastery and relationships by @jadapsmith recently posted to her Instagram:
This approach applies to almost every type of relationship I can think of. Yet in another world, the political world of our time, people are encouraged to quote literally allow their traumas and fears dictate how they interact with people who don't look like them.

1/ @ezraklein has written an important essay. A Rosetta Stone for SJWs/Non-SJW Left/Conservatives.

This piece on the @nytimes’ hiring of gender & race-baiter @sarahjeong is also spectacular in that it somehow manages to combine deep insight with barely believable cluelessness.
2/ @ezraklein describes “Feminist Twitter” (which doesn’t of course actually exist by virtue of Twitter’s open design) as a place where the words #KillAllMen came to mean simply “it would be nice if the world sucked less for women.”

You sorta have to read it to believe it:
3/ As you can see from @ezraklein’s emotive shadings, he’s deeply troubled by patriarchy, yet only mildly annoyed at #KillAllMen feminism. What I would call open racism/sexism against whites/men is to him a kind of edgy snarky in-group lingo, but weirdly sent in the open to all.
