Thanks to @WBEN for highlighting the reading crisis in our region and the need to discuss ways in which reading instruction should be improved in WNY schools. This is an important conversation.

We agree with school leaders on two points.

First, we agree that the NYSED data is not “an accurate reflection of a student’s growth.”

But that isn’t the point of our report.

According to NYSED, the ELA assessments “provide students, families, and educators credible measures of students' English Language Arts skills and knowledge."

Starting your day in a kindergarten is always good.

When the kinders are completely engaged in a strong phonics lesson, learning a new digraph, it’s AWESOME.

A peek into a lesson on the /ch/ digraph:
I’m visiting with the #KnowledgeMatters School Tour, one of my favorite initiatives in K-12.

The tour visits schools doing 💪 work with high-quality curriculum. This leg visits Tennessee schools using the free foundational skills curriculum developed by @TNedu.

More here:
It’s the first year with a strong systematic phonics program… but you wouldn’t know it!

We spotted sound walls the minute we walked in.

On my way to Tennessee, and SO EXCITED for this leg of the #KnowledgeMatters School Tour!

Did you know Tennessee created its own free, open source foundational skills curriculum for schools? #swoon

I see it in action tomorrow in @ElizCitySchools!
Tennessee is a standout leader in use of high-quality curriculum, and they’ve done much more to advance reading instruction under the #Reading360 initiative.

I’ll be there a few times for @TNedu Tennessee Literacy Month, and it’s truly an honor to see and share this work.
In the meantime, enjoy this phonics lesson from one of our previous trips to Tennessee, in @PCSSTN.

Every child deserves to learn “the code” of the English language, and this is how it’s done.

This is a really important piece by @natwexler.

First and foremost, it's the only reporting I've seen on a major achievement by @TNedu:

Almost all Tennessee districts now use high-quality curriculum! That's HUGE.

Increasing use of high-quality curriculum is a longtime goal of many states. In fact, 13 states participate in @CCSSO's High-Quality Instructional Materials and Professional Development (IMPD) network, squarely focused on this goal.

TN is one of the 13...

And so far, it's the biggest success story, given this traction.

In 2019-20, I had a chance to visit six of the pioneers in this work with the #KnowledgeMatters School Tour, and the local leadership was abundant.

Here was one thread – it's long, but...+

I was only able to catch part of @DrSarahLupo's session at #LiteracyMatters, but I was delighted to see that she was speaking about the importance of knowledge-building curriculum!

Definitely gonna catch this recording.

Knowledge-building curriculum isn't just about a healthy dose of nonfiction!

There is SO much more to the intentional design.

I talked about this in my session, too. @DrSarahLupo went into greater detail.
We aren't just building new knowledge, we are thoughtful about activating prior knowledge...

When our #KnowledgeMatters Tour visited @SalemSchoolsk12, we heard about the district’s shift from Teachers College Reading Workshop to stronger curriculum.

Teachers @staceyvail523, Erica Cabral, and Samantha Lear shared their experiences.

“We were pulling from 125 different places.

There was so much cross checking between making sure that we were covering things that Lucy might not spell out so easily,” like teaching nouns and verbs.

@staceyvail523, a seventeen year veteran teacher in grades K and 2
“It meant a lot of Teachers Pay Teachers, which is not the best stuff.”

The time and $ cost driven by the need to supplement Reading Workshop was a theme across our conversations in @SalemSchoolsk12.

Let’s hear from teachers in UP Academy Holland about the shift from @FountasPinnell / balanced literacy to research-aligned curriculum, @ELeducation.

You don’t want to miss this… 🔥

Tiana Wallace says that before, “everything was bucketed.”

“In writers workshop, you might be focused on animals. In read aloud, you might be focused on family.”

@ELeducation, which is designed for deep study in content areas, is supporting stronger vocab acquisition for Ss.
Wallace teaches ESL, and vocabulary development is esp. critical for English Learners!

We also heard about this lack of coherence from 1st grade teacher Alexa Reynolds.

Writers workshop was not connected to the read aloud, which was not connected to the reading tip.

I spent my week in Massachusetts, which is Balanced Literacy Territory, meeting amazing educators shifting away from BL.

LOTS to say about that…

But let’s start with a look at the market share of the lowest-rated curricula for elementary ELA.

First, a fun fact:

Massachusetts is the only state to publish info on the curriculum used in each district. Find it here: google.com/maps/d/u/0/vie…

HT @MASchoolsK12. 👏

It’s such valuable info that you’d think every state would do this! The other 49 do not. Image
I spent time with the map, which shows the curricula used in 177 of 404 districts in MA. So, it’s a partial sample.

I found 55 districts that use Reading Workshop / Units of Study, including “top” districts like Brookline.
