Gatwaro Stadium_
During the genocide against Tutsi in the first weeks of April 1994, thousands of Tutsi were displaced from their homes. Government officials directed many to take refuge in places such as schools, churches and stadiums.

In previous attacks, these types of locations had been safe shelters. But after that , they became extermination centers.
Kibuye, a town in the northwest corner of the country, was the site of two such massacres that resulted in the murder of thousands of Tutsi over four days.

I have a story to tell you.
A story of a broken heart.
A story of resilience.
A story of hope.

I promised my friend Charles Habonimana - @Habonima so many times that I would visit his birth place, Mayunzwe, in @RuhangoDistrict, @RwandaSouth.
I did yesterday and I should say that June 4th, 2019 will forever be memorable in my heart. #Kwibuka25
Karoli is a Genocide Survivor whose testimony till today, I have failed to understand. In an attempt to do so, I visited where his story all began. To my surprise, I found a house that he is building, where their home was before the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. #Kwibuka25

Genocide Survivor Albert Nsengimana was only 7 years old when he witnessed his eight brothers slaughtered before his eyes on the orders of his mother, also suffering similar unimaginable torture when his mother took him to be killed, but miraculously managed to escape. #Kwibuka25
Twenty-five years living with this indescribable wound Nsengimana writes a book called “Ma mere m’a tué” or “my mother killed me”. Released on Thursday 4th April 2019, the book tells his story of survival and forgiveness. #Kwibuka25
In this book “Ma mere m’a tué”, the seventh child in the family of nine boys, born to a Tutsi father and a Hutu mother, says that during the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, he knew nothing about ethnicity. #Kwibuka25

When I was in #Rwanda in 2017 to commemorate the #GenocideAgainstTheTutsi, I struggled with how best to honour the survivors who so generously shared their stories. Was it in retelling of unimaginable horrors they were subjected to?Or in celebrating survival, resilience & strength?
I shared stories of survival and courage. And I also took home in my heart resilience and joy. Remembering #Kigali Independent University student survivors #Kwibuka25

Today marks 25yrs since the genocide against the Tutsis in #Rwanda. The international community stood by as more than 800,000 people were slaughtered in 100 days.
In 2017, I was honoured to be in Rwanda for the commemoration. #RwandaGenocide
A thread I wrote in #Kigali in 2017 during the ceremonies to mark the anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsis. There are 250,000 Tutsi victims of the 1994 genocide buried at #Kigali Genocide Memorial #Rwanda #Kwibuka25
Kwibuka means Remembrance. It was an honour to join The Walk to Remember in #Kigali two years ago to remember the #GenocideAgainstTheTutsi. I send love and solidarity to friends in #Rwanda who are remembering today, the 25th anniversary. #Kwibuka25
