1/ One of the issues w/ public health policy making is the lack of accountability or even full understanding of the effects of those policies. Yesterday was an example of this when #LACounty @lapublichealth @MayorOfLA restricted outdoor TVs from playing the #SuperBowl.
2/ I personally know of multiple unvaccinated friends who decided to gather indoors as a result.

It was 70 degrees & sunny in Los Angeles yesterday.

The state already opened outdoor dining & made people feel like it was 'safe' to do this.

But then- they ban TVs outside.
3/ What they are essentially telling the public is that they aren't responsible enough to do this.

That the government decides how responsible you are, rather than mitigating risk & giving you ways to socialize more safely.

And then they wonder why...

The messaging from #LACounty is ridiculous. On the one hand, they opened up all of these restaurants for outdoor dining & made people feel like things are getting better- but they aren’t allowing outdoor TVs to play the Super Bowl? People are going to meet indoors instead...
2/ This is bad public health. It’s just like when beaches were closed during July 4th. We need to mitigate risk & create safe options for socialization - bc people have shown time & time again that they will socialize either way (not blaming them)
3/ Alternatively they could have set up outdoor viewing sites at parks etc; created distanced pods— many ways to get creative here as was done in other places. But just assuming that people won’t congregate when they have been told it’s getting much safer now...?? #covid19

1/ So #LACounty is resuming outdoor dining after #COVID19 stay-at-home order is canceled-- this article quotes California health experts who are concerned that people need to remain vigilant.

It's strange that **outdoor dining** was a target though...

2/ As many of us have said, a key to controlling transmission is for people to avoid high risk situations.

Most if not all of these are *indoors*

If safer outdoor options are shut down, people are likely to migrate indoors where socialization isn't regulated
3/ California has the benefit of tolerable outdoor weather year round

The game plan here should have been to convince people to modify activities in a way that mitigates risk but gives them safer options to continue life.

Outdoors w/ physical distancing is a good way

Short🧵
1/
So @CDCgov on their “Your Guide to Masks” has a section saying don’t use N95s or surgical masks for the general public bc they are reserved for healthcare workers. That is their reason. They invoke a *shortage of supply* as their main rationale
cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
2/ On a separate page, they talk about the presumption that most transmission of #covid19 is happening via droplets but in *special circumstances* transmission happens via aerosols as well

What are those?

Enclosed spaces w/ poor ventilation

cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
3/ In those situations, N95 & other high filtration masks are key. @cdcgov if there’s a supply issue then *fix* it

Bc being in enclosed crowded spaces is not a *special circumstance*

Many Americans find themselves in these situations every single day, from transit to groceries

1// Have been saying this for months— and have actually have been doing this for the entire year any time I went back to LA to see family, even with a negative test.

High risk workers should mask at home if they have regular exposure. Every layer matters. #covid19
2// Increasingly colleagues of mine are incidentally testing positive without known exposure- takes 1-2 days to get PCR result back; end up exposing whole family in that time.

Nothing inherently safe about the home unfortunately.
3// In fact, may end up being most dangerous given less likely to mask here; very close prolonged exposure; crowding; ventilation variable

Now I’m going to accept that pragmatically speaking, most people are not going to mask at home BUT here are some personal recommendations...

Ten years ago today, I got a phone call that a body was found and that it was identified as being #MitriceRichardson.
Mitrice's naked mummified remains were found in a creek bed in Malibu Canyon adjacent to a 21-acre ranch that is known for producing pornography.
This after being arrested on Sep. 16, 2009 on charges of "suspicion of not paying for a meal" & possession of less than an ounce of marijuana when the staff at Geoffrey's in Malibu called the #LACounty Sheriffs on her for displaying "bizarre" behavior and not paying her bill.

1| Here is the #Covid19 situation in LA County prisons:

The number of incarcerated men and women in prisons in LA County was 20,402 as of March 2020. That is 25% over capacity for the eight County (Sheriff), State, and Federal facilities in #LACounty.
2| Over 3,500 or 17% of incarcerated men and women have been infected; 13 have died.

Over 50% of the infections originate from the North County Correction and the Pitchess Facilities in Castaic; both Sheriff facilities. Over a 100 staff have been infected as well.
3| Infections in @LACoSheriff facilities:

North County: 1 in 3 infected
Pitchess: 1 in 5 infected
Men's Central: 1 in 9 infected
Twin Towers: 1 in 11 infected

To put it in perspective, in LA County there is 1 person infected for every 100 people.

This morning’s media open house highlighted the strides we have made as a department and the obstacles we have overcome. To recap, I’d like to point out the #LASD’S achievements this year. 1st, violent crimes across @CountyofLA are down 15.15%. #SheriffV Image
2nd ICE transfers are down 53%, keeping true to my campaign promise that I would remove the ICE agents from our facilities. Jail violence has also decreased, despite the rise in in our inmate population. Image
3rd recruitment is up, a total 65% increase over the previous 4 year average. As Captain McBride stated, we achieved this by changing our culture. We seek qualified candidates but no longer treat them like criminals; a practice which previously dissuaded most from applying. Image

Reports that ICE is still in our jails is untrue. Our “release and compliance” desk manned by custody assistants is not proof that we are working for ICE. ICE detainees go through one desk for uniformity and accuracy. #SheriffV #OpenHouse ImageImage
