"#Imitation vs #Innovation: Large #Language and Image Models as Cultural #Technologies"

"Today you hear people talking about 'AN #AI' or 'THE AI.' Even 15 years ago we would not have heard this; we just heard 'AI.'"
@AlisonGopnik on the history of thought on the #intelligence (or lack thereof) of #simulacra, linked to the convincing foolery of "double-talk artists":
"We should think about these large #AI models as cultural technologies: tools that allow one generation of humans to learn from another & do this repeatedly over a long period of time. What are some examples?"

@AlisonGopnik suggests a continuity between #GPT3 & language itself:

1/ @michaelpollan's highly-expected @netflix series #HowToChangeYourMind just premiered! 📺🍄 Despite near-universal praise, #HTCYM is rife with errors & borders on historical revisionism 🤥

2/ Before I get started, I'll give everyone a little bit of background information. @michaelpollan released a non-fiction work entitled "How to Change Your Mind" in May of 2018. Before the end of that year, his book about #psychedelic drugs became a @nytimes bestseller. Image
3/ @michaelpollan achieved massive coverage for this self-described "mental travelogue" of his #psychedelic experiences. Soon enough, Mr. Pollan became a prominent figure w/in the so-called "Psychedelic Renaissance". In the process, he gained a rather interesting reputation. Image

And his #ComplexityPodcast episode on ideas from that talk and this one:

"People often think of societies as cooperative, but some societies are NOT very cooperative. I prefer to put the focus on them as groups."

"Societies are just one aspect of belonging. There are groups *within* societies & that's what psychologists mostly focus on."

In Human culture the analogy between day, year and life is very precise: each one has four seasons (that are further divided into three periods each).

#life #age #conlang #calendar #youth #wordoftheday #wordsmith #linguistics #languagematters #language #langtwt #conculture
Let's consider the first periods:
• Primanɔtte (Earlynight) is like Priminvɛrno (Earlywinter) and when you are a bambino (a person from 0 to 7 years old).
• Meʒʒanɔtte (Midnight) is like Meʒʒinvɛrno (Midwinter) and when you are a citto (a person from 7 to 14 years old).
• Tardanɔtte (Latenight) is like Tardinvɛrno (Latewinter) and when you are a ragazzo (a person from 14 to 21 years old).

The rationale behind alphabetical order in Human:
• 1 vowel, 4 consonants, 1 vowel, 4 consonants...
• Impulse vowel (ɔ) at the beginning, culmination vowel (a) at the centre, cadence vowel (ɛ) at the end.

#conlang #alphabet #language #letters #linguistics #human #langtwt
• Impulse nasal (m) at the beginning, culmination nasal (n) at the centre, cadence nasal (ŋ) at the end.
• Pure letter (h) at the centre.
• Elemental vowels follow the order of the Elements: Water (u), Air (e), Fire (i), Earth (o).
• Non-nasal sonorants near their elemental vowel: Water (ʋ), Air (l), Fire (j), Earth (r).

The conference brought together scientists in quantum gravity and quantum information, and philosophers working on the conceptual aspect of spacetime and the quantum. We opted for an innovative format: no lengthy talks but 2-hour discussions for each different question! #QISS Image
Before discussing each question, the sessions were opened by a few lightening talks of 15’ max that were meant to introduce the question and ignite the following discussion. The format worked out with the discussions touching on the talks’ topic and getting wider and wider! #QISS Image

1/ Meeting with REALITY of Legal Profession in India.

It was June 1982. My first day in court. I went in Chief Judicial Magistrate Court to see court proceedings.

There is Prohibition Law in Gujarat since Independance Day.

The poor, who were found drunk are arrested and
2/ are being tried in court of law.

The whole courtroom was crowded and there was a strong smell of alcohol in the air.

The defense counsel was also fully drunk.

Alcohol Smell was coming out from his mouth every time he was making submissions to Judge.
3/ The Judge was fully focused on the case on hand. He chose to ignore that defense counsel was also fully drunk and he was liable to be sent to jail.. The Judge simply ignored the smell.

This was my first day in court. I learned that in this legal profession,

Can computational methods assess the #sentiment of complex texts? In an article with my fabulous colleagues from the @WZB_Berlin, @unipotsdam @LMU_Muenchen @JungeAkademie, we answer this question by applying #dictionary and #scaling methods on a sample of #literature reviews🧵
The article is also a practical #guide to help researchers select an appropriate #method and degree of preprocessing for their own data. Our #corpus consisted of 6.041 summaries of reviews of contemporary German #literature acquired from @perlentaucher00 (2/9)
The linguistic #complexity of #literature reviews differ from other texts with regard to their #language-- ambiguity, irony, metaphors, etc.-- are comparatively difficult to capture with #computational approaches. So how did our different methods fare? (3/9)

Mini-Rant About The Phrase "Work-Life Balance," Which I Didn't Know I Felt So Strongly About Until Just Now. Image
The phrase "work-life balance" is a hallmark of the problem we have with authenticity — how can we be authentic leaders if the very language we use to talk about our lives is falsely compartmentalized?

Proud to announce the final paper of my dissertation is out @ASHAJournals 🎉

Here, we aimed to assess longitudinal performance in language and other cognitive domains important for academic success in young adults with acquired brain injury (ABI) participating in intensive rehab Image
22 young adults with ABI (#stroke, traumatic brain injury (#TBI), tumor, encephalitis) attended ≥ 12-week semester of the Intensive Cognitive and Communication Rehabilitation program. The program (lectures, individual therapy, tech. training), was held 6 hours/day, 4 days/week. Image
14 young adults with ABI served as deferred treatment/usual care control participants. All participants demonstrated language and/or other cognitive impairment on a standardized assessment battery (WAB, RBANS, SCCAN, DCT) administered before/after each semester.

What can we learn from the #language of “living with covid”?

We wrote about the origins of “living with it”; how it became associated with Covid-19, and how – like other idiomatic phrases – it closes down discussion (“just live with it!”)

🧵 expands short piece in @bmj_latest Image
2. We searched on @LexisNexisUK for the first use, first use in association with Covid-19, and frequency of use, of twelve variations of ‘living with it’ and ‘learning to live with it’, up to the start of 2022.

It’s clear that ‘live/living’ outpaced ‘learn/learning’ versions. Image
3. Here are some examples from Lexis Nexis.

For each iteration of the phrase, we looked at the date and quote of the first (non-covid) mention; number of hits/mentions (to end December 2021); first Covid-19 mention, and an exemplar recent Covid-19 mention. ImageImageImage

Forensic Statement Analysis: #Sexualabuse in the language of the perpetrator is often seen by the use of doors, lights, water & coverings. Jonbenet Ramsay was a victim of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her father.  Statement Analysis shows the connection to "lights"
within statements and sexual activity, and "doors" to childhood #sexualabuse  Repeated studies into these two elements shows a consistent  #linguistic connection.  When taken with the belief that it is rare to lie outright, we consider: Instead of saying, "I found
my daughter in the basement closet" or something else, John Ramsey went to 'narrative' form; that is, to lengthen out information, to explain, where no explanation is needed.  In doing so, he gave us links to sexual abuse without the need to even view

to preserve our #Identity #culture and #language. We are not against Hindi but against Imposition. 1965 revolution is regarded as watershed movement in history of India and as well as Tamilnadu. After 1965, no National parties come to power in Tamilnadu state.

If such revolution doesn't happened, #Hindi would be only official language since 1965. English might lose its significance. Certainly,we would communicate only in Hindi as like north Indians, all our posts, communication and records will be in Hindi.
