#Language

Silence is a tool I employ to avoid creating conflict, but not for the lack of an opinion.

However, at times, one needs to voice their opinion, especially when it's observed some really wonderful friends falling prey to the rhetoric.

My views. A short thread

Proudly born and brought up in Bangalore, I am exposed to multiple languages. The beauty of Kannadigas is our compassion, empathy and ability to welcome and embrace multiple cultures.

It's pretty common that one learns multiple languages in school including Hindi

2/n
When one works in a truly cosmopolitan setup, one is exposed to various international and local cultures. I am as much peeved that people don't learn or appreciate Kannada and have done every bit possible to influence them.

Beyond that, one resigns to fate.. Time heals..

Thread warning: A long thread coming on the life and work of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, a world-renowned Kenyan writer, scholar, and social activist. His seminal work, "Decolonising the Mind" is a brilliant exposition of how integral language is to culture and identity.

#Literature
Language is a central question in all of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's work. In his work, he proposes a "theory of language", in which "language exists as culture" & "language exists as communication". For him, a language carries the histories, values, and aesthetics of culture within it.
Born in Kamiriithu, near Limuru in Kiambu district, Kenya in 1938, he was soon baptized and given a name (James Ngugi). His first encounter with colonial institutions happened when he was sent to study in The Alliance High School (seen as a civilizing instrument for Africans).

It was lunch time in #Brazil on a Saturday in 1990 when I decided it was time to be born! I grew up in a large city in #SãoPaulo called #Guarulhos, which in Tupi (native language) means “eaters” or “big-bellied people”. Here’s the proof I am “Guarulhense”:

Our #family was not wealthy, but my parents made sure I had good #education, even if that meant sacrificing part of their own life. For that I will be forever #grateful. They made sure I learned how to #appreciate everything I had that money could not buy.

Since this unintelligent debate about #Mawlana´s origin goes on, I feel forced to weigh in and start a #Thread about #Rumi´s origin, the nature of the Persianate #civilization, what labels he used to describe himself and by extension other classical figures of our shared heritage
We must start by pointing out how people in the Persianspeakers in general identify themselves. As you may already know, the Persianate world transcended tribalism a millennia ago and became a highly urban civilization. Therefore Persianspeakers primarily identify with the...
the regions or cities they live in. This is why Mawlana is called "Balkhi" and "Rumi" (Roman), because we Persianspeakers consider that regionalism in general beats ethnicity. Just look at other great figures: Rudaki, Hafiz Shirazi, Jami, Khwarezmi,.. all of them are named...

I am looking for a program &/or resources that help teach #Somali to our children.

Like lots of 2nd gen ppl the #language our parents spoke is now firmly my 2nd language. I'm interested in ideas that promote #multilingualism, feel free to share & tag others. #online #clubs Image
@Poetic_Nomad @SomaliKids @thesailorsgirl @MohammedAArtan @numbiarts @AliAbdi_ @SamOfSomalia @HannaAli @Rooble2009 @Gulaid1 @robjama I sometimes feel that passing on a #language is harder for us 2nd & 3rd gen ppl. Although we were born & raised outside 'wadankii', the dynamics are different for our youth now. Interested to know what the educators think?

#Somali #Identity @MualimMohamed @ashahodan #teach
Thank Q #SomaliTwitter, I learned a lot about this today through conversations both on & offline. There is a lot of talent in our community, enough to design solutions to this & other challenges. My parents came to UK in the 60's, I grew up in the 80/90's. @WaaberiPhone 1/2

I had a very hectic day today. But still took out time 2read the #NEP2020 #NewEducationPolicy , at least Part 1, School Education. Although there is a huge gap between Policy making and execution, at least on the policy level its a solid good document. Why so much noise?
There are definitely few concerns that require clarification. But overall its a progressive document.

1. The policy i liked best is the inclusion of Age 3-6 in Elementary Education. Considering 85% of brain development happens before age 6 in a child, i am glad they included.
The present flagship programme of the govt, the much touted Sarva Siksha Abhiyan covered Elementary education from Age 6 upwards to age 14. So this is definitely a huge positive.
Concern : The Right to Education Act 2009 covers the Universalisation of Education from age 6-14.

As a PhD candidate in my final(ish) year (I hope to submit by the end of summer, but COVID-induced library closures is making this difficult), it has occurred to me that I am extraordinarily bad at networking. 1/14 #AcademicChatter #twitterstorians #academictwitter #phdchatter
I only really began presenting at conferences last year; and though I'd been accepted to three for this year, all of them have been cancelled due to the global pandemic. 2/14 #AcademicChatter #twitterstorians #academictwitter #phdchatter
On top of this, I am quite a shy person who struggles frequently with impostor syndrome, which makes it difficult for me to "sell" myself when I do try to network. 3/14 #AcademicChatter #twitterstorians #academictwitter #phdchatter
