In Ferguson, protests in 2014 and their disproportionate, heavy-handed police reaction showed that the killing of #MichaelBrown sparked something bigger—exposing tensions that had been bubbling beneath the surface for years.
Months after the Ferguson unrest, we returned to investigate why the relationship between police and local black communities is fraught with distrust.

For many, #MichaelBrown was a symbol for an entire system unfairly tilted against black communities.

1. So there are some thoughts I’ve been wrestling with & hesitant to share simply b/c the thought I wanna get across is so delicate in that I don’t want to I slow down the current momentum nor due I want to white people’s current activity to be fueled guilt rather than love...
2. The moment we are in will be one of two things. It will either be a catalyst for a new era where black and brown people no longer have to fear the police or it will be just another “moment of clarity” that will soon pass as white people get bored and move on to the next thing.
3. But the racial trauma counselor in me can’t shake this reality. That regardless of where the dust settles on this moment, when it does settle, this truth will remain the same.

It took the torture and death of ANOTHER black on camera in order for white people to care.

Racial injustice has been sustained by narratives of fear & anger, argues #BryanStevenson. "To fight against those narratives we need other narratives." Educate yourself on injustice & the systematic criminalization of blackness through these Peabody winning & nominated programs.
@Ava DuVernay's primer on the criminalization of African Americans, "@13thfilm," traces the story from racial slavery to convict leasing systems, from #JimCrow terror to mass incarceration as a way to exercise social control of black populations.

Please take note how ableism and racism are being used together to blame #GeorgeFloyd for his murder. This is common. We need to know and recognize how ableism and racism work together so we can call this shit out. #DisCrit
Since you all are here, listen to the voices of incarcerated girls of color about how racism and ableism constructed them as criminals in their education. routledge.com/The-Pedagogy-o…
I decided to lay out the explicit ways ableism and racism are being used together to blame #GeorgeFloyd for his murder so we can more clearly articulate why this is so wrong. #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd #JusticeForGeorge #DisCrit 1/

THREAD: #KimFoxx and her opponent #BillConway are neck and neck in the race for Cook County State’s Attorney. Regardless of how you feel about the role and responsibilities of the SA’s office, here’s why the choice to #CancelConway is an easy one: chicagoreader.com/chicago/why-we…
Conway is an acolyte of former State’s Attorney #AnitaAlvarez. Alvarez was voted out decisively through the #ByeAnita campaign, after helping bury the murder of #LaquanMcDonald in 2015. This is in part how #KimFoxx won the office. #CancelConway

Conway’s campaign is bankrolled by the #CarlyleGroup, a billion $ arms dealer (headed by his dad) responsible for the teargas used in #BlackLivesMatter protests in Ferguson and in occupied #Palestine. The group is also a large donor to #Trump’s reelection campaign. #CancelConway

1/ Chicago, the nation’s third-biggest city and a frequent political target of President Donald Trump, is facing a history-making municipal #electionday today.

We asked our colleagues at @ProPublicaIL to explain why it’s especially significant:
2/ The city will elect its first black woman as mayor — either Lori Lightfoot or Toni Preckwinkle.

3/ Two-term Chicago Mayor @RahmEmanuel — former chief of staff to @BarackObama — is leaving office after facing widespread criticism for his handling of the fatal police shooting of #LaquanMcDonald.

I am still seething about the sentencing in the #LaquanMcDonald killing, so I cannot imagine how the family feels, but they have my deepest empathy.

The prosecutors sought 20 years for #JasonVanDyke.
He could have gotten life.

It's simply not enough.
Additionally, #JasonVanDyke had been cited in TWENTY previous incidents, two of which ended in lawsuits.

cnn.com/2015/11/25/us/…
#LaquanMcDonald would be turning 21, now.
Every year his family will be memorializing his death, rather than celebrating his life.

#JasonVanDyke is responsible for that.
Shouldn't Van Dyke have at least been sentenced to a year for each of McDonald's 17yrs?

Cook County Judge Domenica Stephenson just acquitted the officers who tried to cover up the #LaquanMcDonald shooting. Data shows she has a history of making racist decisions as a judge. A thread.
Usually data isn’t available showing how individual judges make decisions. But Cook County has extensive data including 1,640 defendants who Judge Domenica Stephenson has sentenced. The data shows she incarcerates black people at higher rates than whites for the same offenses.
Here’s the overall disparity in her sentencing to incarceration rates by race. She sentenced half of white defendants to incarceration but *two-thirds* of black defendants (the rest generally were sentenced to probation). But let’s dive deeper...

Trial begins today for three current/former Chicago cops accused of covering up what really happened the night #LaquanMcDonald was shot. This has kind of flown under the radar compared to Van Dyke’s trial but it is worth your attention. chicagotribune.com/news/laquanmcd…
Van Dyke was charged in a single shooting that lasted seconds. These three are accused of a conspiracy that lasted for months. Prosecutors have framed this as putting the police “code of silence” on trial.
A few things to look out for over the next week:

.@TuckerCarlson I'm not in Antifa. No reasonable person thinks I peddle hate. But you told your audience those things. & then I received a barrage of threats & hate. & I had to take major steps to protect my family. So I can imagine how you feel right now.
And if anyone wants to learn about Antifa here is an interview I did with historian Mark Bray on my old podcast w/ @harikondabolu, #PoliticallyReactive.

Lot of people on both sides are rushing to Tucker Carlson's defense like there are prizes involved. How about you have the same energy when he targets people, especially when those people don't have the privilege or the budgets to defend themselves.

1/ A little delayed because I’m starting a fellowship in NYC this week, but I wanted to share more about how @caylaclements_ & I reported our story about how Chicago's alternative HSs have disproportionately high numbers of student deaths chicagoreporter.com/alternative-sc…
@caylaclements_ 2/ This story began with a FOIA request for student transfer data for another story. When I got the data back, I realized there was a special code for students that CPS had been notified were deceased.
@caylaclements_ 3/ Right away it was clear there were a lot of alternative HSs on the list. Over 4 school yrs, 108 alternative HS students died, out of a total of 425 students district-wide. That means a tiny fraction of the district's enrollment made up a quarter of all student deaths.
