The African American Policy Forum released a report entitled Say Her Name: Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women in 2015 to highlight this overlooked issue. Later that same year, #SandraBland died while incarcerated and still ruled a suicide.

In Ferguson, protests in 2014 and their disproportionate, heavy-handed police reaction showed that the killing of #MichaelBrown sparked something bigger—exposing tensions that had been bubbling beneath the surface for years.

Cook County Judge Domenica Stephenson just acquitted the officers who tried to cover up the #LaquanMcDonald shooting. Data shows she has a history of making racist decisions as a judge. A thread.
Usually data isn’t available showing how individual judges make decisions. But Cook County has extensive data including 1,640 defendants who Judge Domenica Stephenson has sentenced. The data shows she incarcerates black people at higher rates than whites for the same offenses.
Here’s the overall disparity in her sentencing to incarceration rates by race. She sentenced half of white defendants to incarceration but *two-thirds* of black defendants (the rest generally were sentenced to probation). But let’s dive deeper...

@caylaclements_ 2/ This story began with a FOIA request for student transfer data for another story. When I got the data back, I realized there was a special code for students that CPS had been notified were deceased.
@caylaclements_ 3/ Right away it was clear there were a lot of alternative HSs on the list. Over 4 school yrs, 108 alternative HS students died, out of a total of 425 students district-wide. That means a tiny fraction of the district's enrollment made up a quarter of all student deaths.
