For every outbreak or public health emergency in Nigeria, we heard more about @WHO who appeared to be at the forefront with @Fmohnigeria and its agencies; old #NPI which merged with @NphcdaNG fought #polio with the support of @WHO @UNICEF @Rotary etc.

Conteh spent his professional career working with people with Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to West Africa. Lassa fever was first brought to the attention of the public in 1969 during an outbreak in Nigeria.
Lassa fever, also known as Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LHF), is a type of viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus. Many of those infected by the virus do not develop symptoms. When symptoms occur they typically include fever, weakness, headaches, vomiting, and muscle pains

The Lassa fever virus is spread by infected rats. These rats are found nearly everywhere in our environment and are very difficult to eliminate

Over the last 3 years, there has been an increased interest of global institutions- public health, research and funding institutes, in the work we do especially in response to #meningitis #Lassafever #monkeypox. We need research to develop new tools to improve response
I've had interesting and very stimulating discussions this week, that highlight the critical difference the government structure in a Federal Republic like #Nigeria creates for health security, compared to countries with unitary systems of government

Our role at @NCDCgov as included in the #NCDCAct requires us to 'support' states in outbreak preparedness and response. However, the dependence from states on the national agency is very high. Yet, we cannot ignore, because when we do, people die.
Health is on the "concurrent" list in #Nigeria, i.e responsibility of Federal & Sate govts. Unlike our security architecture which is centralised, our #healthsecurity is de-centralised. No clear line of control & we've to work hard to collaborate & cooperate across govt levels
Our attention has been drawn to a message circulating on WhatsApp and this tweet, purporting that there is a suspected #Lassafever case in the Asokoro District Hospital. This is entirely FALSE.
The recent national #Lassafever situation report indicates there has been no confirmed Lassa fever case in the FCT since February 2019. Contrary to the message being circulated, no death has been recorded from Lassa fever in the FCT this month. Available: ncdc.gov.ng/diseases/sitreā¦
The NCDC appreciates Nigerians for bringing this rumour to our notice. We urge everyone to stay alert for #Lassafever, know the symptoms and report immediately to a health facility when symptoms are observed, to increase the chances of survival.

Ebonyi is one of the three #Lassafever hotspot states in #Nigeria. In the last 2 years, the state has improved its capacity to prepare for, detect and respond to outbreaks, with support from @NCDCgov and several partners
I was very pleased to see the expansion of parts of the treatment centre, especially the creation of more triage areas in the hospital. The treatment centre has learnt from previous healthcare workers' infections and has put in more efforts to protect staff

Poor water, sanitation and hygiene, is a recurrent risk factor for many infectious diseases we face in #Nigeria, especially with #Lassafever and #cholera. We simply cannot #endcholera if we do not address #WASH
