I’ve been a hospital manager for >15 years - much of that time spent managing flow and urgent care - and it’s never been a harder or more dispiriting job.

But there are still some EASY things that will always improve flow if we focus on getting them right every day.

A short🧵
#1 - “EARLY”

Patients admitted before lunch stay in hospital ~1-2 days less than those admitted in the PM.

Patients discharged home in the day have more chance of staying there.

Getting people admitted EARLY and home EARLY is important
#2 ASSESSMENT

Admitting to hospital should always be a last resort so we have to make sure we have effective ASSESSMENT pathways in place, reliable senior decision making in ASSESSMENT areas and keep ASSESSMENT areas free for that purpose - avoid bedding down at all costs!
