Eventually something goes wrong for Donald Duck.

After a long day of cutting hair, this kid tries his patience.

We all know how much patience Donald has.

He thinks he’s so clever when he looses his temper.

Angry Donald is the most fun to draw.
Donald would have stabbed that kid with the scissors if the kid didn’t duck out of the way.

I remember realizing that when drawing it, and chuckled to myself.

Donald Duck is late for work.

His boss isn't happy.

But Donald clocks in and gets right to it.

I wasn't sure at first how I was going to have Donald cross the line of kids, so I came up with that gate gag.

It also serves as a moment for Donald to feel guilty in front of his boss.
Donald is a jack of many trades, but not really an expert of any.

He’s a good barber when he puts his mind to it, but something will tick him off.

Hint: It’ll be in my next post.

Storyboards for the dirty, violent wrestling montage from #LegendoftheThreeCaballeros episode, Mexico à Go-Go.

Most of these shots made it to the final animation, some were rearranged.

There are 7 characters fighting in the ring, including the snake staff.

In the story, it's a moment of chaos and distraction (and physical cartoon comedy).

They all let their guard down while fighting each other, unaware of the larger threat that is about to overtake them.
I really really enjoyed drawing Leopold.

He can easily be both menacing and a comedic goofball.

When he takes a hit, he takes it hard. ImageImageImageImage

Donald chops his stove in half. Temper, temper.

This is one of those times I think the final animation didn't quite live up to the storyboard poses. But the action happens fast and the story still progresses. That's TV animation for you. ImageImage
Here's why the animation didn't match my storyboard:

The animation is not hand drawn.

It is rigged, meaning the character models are digitally "built" in a 2D structure and then manipulated into the poses. That's a simplistic way of understanding it.

Therefore...
These more extreme poses are harder to achieve from the neutral poses of the character rigs. Sometimes the animators pull it off. Sometimes not.

Animating is hard.

TV animation just doesn't have the time or budget to revise every shot that isn't its best. That's the reality.

Daisy calls Donald.

Storyboard / Final shot. ImageImage
Clearly the Twitter cropping algorithm favors Donald over Daisy. I don't blame it. He's the more famous character.
I often drew Donald's lower bill rounded when he was happy because the shape resembles a smiley mouth.

The main character model, however, favored the squared lower bill so that's what came out in most of the animation.

Storyboards for my original bus station gag in #LegendoftheThreeCaballeros:

When Daisy first calls Donald, the station looks nice. When she calls again later, it's turned rough.

This final shot is from the first call. Making it rough raises the stakes when Donald forgets her. ImageImageImage
It's no longer a location gag, which is fine. It serves the story better to have the bus station look rough from the start.
Another thing. I believe Disney wasn't on board with the vagrant characters and just wanted them out. I get that regarding the Disney brand in this show.

That said, I like the way I designed those characters. I got to make up Disney vagrants. 😀

The animator's job is to capture the essence of the storyboards, yet improve upon it. I think they've done a solid job giving Donald his domestic charm. ImageImageImageImage
@disneyplus I remember having a discussion about how to draw Donald's tongue when his mouth is open so wide. Turns out they didn't do that in the final animation. I was going for him looking like he was about to devour his breakfast just as the phone rang.
@disneyplus Here it is, Mickey Mouse's birthday, and I'm posting Donald Duck art. Make of it what you will.

This is not what a typical TV animation storyboard panel looks like.

I had just drawn these dragons and while waiting on info from my director, I started shading and getting carried away.

And this ended up in the final board.

Compare to the finished shot. It looks so amazing in color! Image
The talented artists at @mercuryfilmwrks brought it to colorful life.
