The #PremierLeague is back!

How has your team’s GK performed?

#Pickford’s class shot stopping & distribution puts him top 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

#Pope, #Henderson, & #Leno have had great starts at their new clubs🧤

Big mistakes have cost #DeGea & #Ramsdale 😱

#Ward has struggled in all areas 😞
The GK xG model shown above looks at every shot faced, pass received, cross faced & through ball faced & calculates the probability of a goal occurring for & against the GK’s team before the event & after the event occurs!

Thus it measures & evaluates every action a GKs makes!
This allows all GKs to be given a single number measured in goals called

“Total Value in Goals”

Which describes the GK’s value to their side vs having a league average GK & takes into account everything they do meaning GKs of vastly different styles can be fairly compared!

THREAD:

How good has #Ramsdale been for #Arsenal so far?

I’ve seen him described as both “the signing of the season” & “a camera save merchant” but what does the data say?

In this thread I will breakdown his performance in all areas of goalkeeping using my bespoke models

#AFC
Shot Stopping:

#Ramsdale’s shot stopping has been excellent, my model predicts he has saved #AFC ~3 goals more than an average #PL shot stopper would’ve thus far!

He’s basically only conceded vs close range shots in the corners & has pulled a few shots out of the top corners!
Shot Stopping:

His Best 3 Saves (Lowest ExSave Saves Made) are below 😮:

1. 31% Save Probability vs Bowen

2. 52% Save Probability vs Maddison

3. 57% Save Probability vs Moura

They highlight #Ramsdale big strength, his agility & ability to cover huge amounts of the goal area.

THREAD: #Ramsdale to #Arsenal

It will be interesting to see how #Ramsdale gets on at #AFC & how his game evolves.

One thing #AFC know they are getting is a quality 1v1 stopper!

My model suggests #Ramsdale’s 1v1 prowess saved #SUFC ~3 goals more than an average #PL GK would’ve!
In comparison #Leno was average at stopping 1v1s last year & given the brand of football #Arsenal wish to play maybe this was in their thought process when they scouted #Ramsdale.

My model has #Ramsdale as one of the top 5 1v1 stoppers in the #PL & potentially can still improve!
#Ramsdale’s strength vs close range 1v1s is down to his lightning fast speed of thought & speed off the line in combination with his wonderful bravery & tidy spread technique.

This save vs #Wolves is a good example

Rambo creates a huge barrier & snuffs out an excellent chance!

#DeGea’s penalty record hasn’t been good recently & while the sample size is too small to conclude he’s bad at them his technique does seem flawed.

Preshot he pulls his foot inward in the opposite direction to his dive meaning he will always struggle to reach the corner!

This “negative step” means his footwork actually moves him further from the corner he wants to dive to rather than closer to it!

Therefore using this technique he will always at struggle to get across to penalties which are right in the corner even if he goes the correct way! Image
Ironically #Henderson’s is one of the best GKs I’ve seen at using a strong “positive” step when facing PKs

Look at the ground he makes up preshot!

This means he can dive all the way to the corner & thus if he goes the right way he has a great chance of saving it!
