Let's talk about #Lethbridge.

Here, you'll find the highest drug poisoning rate in any #Alberta city.

What is happening there is a massacre. 1/8

In 2020, shortly after coming to power, @YourAlberta accused the ARCHES supervised consumption site, of financial impropriety and closed it down.

The investigation later tracked every last legitimate penny. 2/8

In this week's critical @edmontonjournal piece, @JunkerAnna reported over 80 deaths per 100,000 in two of three areas of Lethbridge.

Meanwhile, First Nations neighbouring the city, including Piikani and Kainai, are being DEVASTATED by poisonings. 3/8

But we've already seen how shuttering services plays out in #Edmonton.
We also know how closing the supervised consumption site worked out in #Lethbridge.

It was, incredibly, AB's only supervised inhalation site. Around 50% of poisoning deaths follow inhalation use.

Still think this isn't intentional policy?

Double-confirmed #YQL rumour that Kenney was loudly booed at the #Brier2022 in #Lethbridge when he came up on the jumbotron. #ableg
Small-city prairie curling crowds are not a constituency that conservatives can afford to lose (trust me… I know this works well!)
People have speculated that Team Botcher would be booed because Darren Moulding has Coaldale roots. Turns out it took the premier to bring the boos out.

I spent the day calling pharmacies in #Lethbridge and #Airdrie, seeing who would stock #Mifegymiso for #MedicalAbortion. Here are a few wild things I learned:
1) Not a single pharmacist knew what the medication was for (fair enough, I don't expect them to know every medication). But considering none of them knew it, most certainly had an opinion about it once I shared the indication for use!
2) Not a single pharmacy had the medication in stock. I called over 25 pharmacies today, folks. I never experienced this in #Ontario. When I said that to one pharmacist, he laughed at me and said, "yes, we are proud to be different here."

It's well-known @cathmckenna and I are friends - forged through similar challenges when we were both Enviro Ministers taking action on climate change.

A lot of what she says in the @globeandmail @garymasonglobe piece below resonated, especially: (thread) #ableg #cdnpoli
That feeling of being constantly on edge vis a vis my own safety has been something I have also lived with for more than 6 years.
For me, it hasn’t been people defacing my office so much as *literally* being targeted by the local police force. #lethbridge #yql
The first examples of targeting and victimization were justified - by the officers themselves - by their disagreement with my political decisions. There were no substantive consequences for those actions, and in fact the LPS hid the disciplinary process from me!

I recently visited with some #Lethbridge ICU nurses about their pandemic 4th wave experience. A hospital is a very siloed work environment, so my experience in the ER can be quite different from that in the ICU. Here are some of the things they would like the public to know: 1/9
First, a big thank-you to everyone in the community who has expressed their support and kindness through the cards, gifts and words of encouragement the unit has received. This includes the silent majority of community members who trust and respect health professionals, 2/9
#yql
and are doing what they can to protect themselves and others from Covid-19. Also those willing to speak out about their experiences with #COVID19Ab, and counter the rampant misinformation around us. 3/9

My Grandma was moved from #Lethbridge #yql ICU to the #Edmonton #yeg ICU to await a transplant.
Her liver and kidneys are both failing.
She is one of the ones drawing a short stick in the triage world.
1/
she is too sick to wait and they need the room in ICU for the increasing #COVID19AB cases in the province.
She has now been taken off the transplant list, and they are going to decrease her life support.
2/
We will lose her within days, none of us can see her, none of us get to say good bye. She will "live" her final days with no loved ones and only medical staff surrounding her.

She didn't end up with COVID but it was ultimately COVID that will take her away from us.

A blanket of smoke is covering #Alberta today.

Climate change events like this are becoming more frequent. So here is a short thread on air quality.

#cdnpoli #ableg #abpoli
cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…
Right now there are air quality advisories across the province.

Health Canada uses a 1-10 scale where 1 is nice clean air and 10 is a like a #Conservative government in your lungs.

Alberta uses the same scale.

airquality.alberta.ca/map/🔗

#ableg #cdnpoli #absmoke ImageImageImage
A 1-10 scale is beautiful in it’s simplicity, but it also fails to communicate what’s really going ok with air pollution.

@environmentca does offer explanations for these numbers, but you have to go looking for them. Image

10 things that shocked me when I came to Canada as an international student from Kenya:

1. Winter is COLD. Well, some areas (e.g. in the West coast such as Vancouver) are relatively warmer. My first winter in #Lethbridge, Alberta, the temperature was -20'C. Hair in my nose was frozen. I wore long johns for the first time.
2. School was cool: I was raised in an environment where power relations favor teachers over students. Schooling was teacher-centred. So, I was shocked to see students call professors by first names. Go to pub together.

I was almost #attacked tonight. I was walking w/my friend back to her home tonight. We had encountered a young woman intoxicated &were trying to get her to the YWCA. 3 men ran out and up a small hill around the #library They had masks covering their faces and hoodies over hair
I watched them get closer as my friend stayed with this young intoxicated girl. Every step, they became faster. As they started literally charging across #stafforddrive I turned, faced them and yelled at them to #stop My friend was on the phone w/help & I kept #yelling
They retreated into the bus shelter outside the library. We Beelined to the YWCA
You know why they stopped? I looked one of them right in the eyes and I saw the small amount of skin visible. This man is #Caucasian & I don’t think they were expecting me or my friend to be #white

We 🇨🇦 may like to think of ourselves as more progressive than our southern neighbours when it comes to drug policy. Truth is, we’re only ever 1 election away fr. regression & fear-mongering based on stigma, racism & a refusal 2 acknowledge the evidence behind harm reduction 2/25
Although Health 🇨🇦 has reiterated current federal support for safe consumption sites (SCS) & endorsed programs providing a safe supply of drugs, each province & territory is ultimately in control of its own healthcare. This🍃harm reduction services in a precarious position. 3/25

Opposition Leader Rachel Notley and MLA Shannon Phillips joined #Lethbridge firefighters today to call on Health Minister Tyler Shandro to abandon his misguided plan to take local ambulance dispatch away from Lethbridge and three other Alberta communities.

#yql #abhealth Image
"There is no evidence that this move will improve ambulance services and there’s a real chance it will make services worse. It’s just not worth it to roll the dice on such a critical system with the lives of Albertans at stake."
- @RachelNotley
Shandro’s plan to centralize the four regional dispatch centres was previously rejected by the Notley NDP government, as well as previous PC governments.

International Overdose Awareness Day Rally and Die In
tinyurl.com/yyna4lot

This event is being held 30 minutes after the @ARCHESLeth Supervised Consumption Service (SCS) closes down; organized by a community of people who care about People Who Use Drugs (PWUD).
1/3
When consistently treated poorly by almost every professional you come across, trusting new people is very hard. ARCHES staff have spent months & years proving to PWUD that building relationships with them have value, is safe.

Relationships will be lost. Imagine the impact.

In 11 day people who rely on the #Lethbridge 13 booth SCS will be left to manage with a 3 booth SCS.

The space is inadequate. No transition plan is aparent. Government of Alberta leadership do no care.

We care. We care a lot and these people matter. #yql

The Alberta NDP Caucus is joining with @nenshi, and mayors of Lethbridge, Red Deer and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in calling for the UCP to reverse their decision to remove EMS dispatch from some communities and centralize it with AHS.
“When every second counts, Albertans need to know help is on the way, not tied up on the phone lines. Jason Kenney and Tyler Shandro’s decision to take emergency 9-1-1 dispatch away from local communities is a bad deal."

Jason Kenney is in #lethbridge today. Families here need answers about his lack of plan or resources for the return to school.
More than 10,000 people have already signed our petition calling on the UCP to fund a safer school plan for the fall. #ableg #yql #abed 1/
Right now, the UCP plans to cram up to 30 kids in to underfunded classrooms, without any extra teachers or assistants, space, PPE or supplies - leaving school boards scrambling.
Yes, it costs money to prepare fora global pandemic. They've had since March to figure it out. 2/
And since March, they've found plenty of money for the following:
-Accelerating $4.7 billion in handouts to already-profitable corporations
-$30 million for an "energy war room," an amateurish propaganda effort that has done nothing but serially embarrass itself 3/ #ableg

Welcome back to the #UCP gaslighting extravaganza—here we have our premier using a flawed study to perpetuate his plan; let’s have a look shall we?
#ABLeg #abpoli
First, if you haven’t read any actual scientific/research based analyses of the impacts of SCS, maybe refer to the experts.

This thread by Dr. Hyshka will tell you everything you need to know.
Next, why is this government so adamant on highlighting negative reports, when positive ones are willfully ignored.

'What we've seen is a reduction in crime severity in and around the supervised consumption sites as well'

Over half way through the year and, at long last, Alberta Q1 2019 opioid reporting is made available. Let’s have a look at the stats shall we?

#abpoli #AbLeg

alberta.ca/opioid-reports…
“There continues to be a high number of accidental fentanyl related poisoning deaths in the province,
however, the number in the most recent quarter is comparatively less than the previous.”

Sounds like the harm reduction and overdose response initiatives are helping.
This begs the question, if we are in fact seeing a decline in overdose deaths, why are we pausing these services in communities that clearly still need them?

Now is not the time defund, delay, or discontinue supervised consumption services.
