Okay, above 500 follows, so time for a thread about what I do: #AcceleratorPhysics! ⚡💥⚛️

In this thread, I'll answer:

❓ What are particle accelerators, and what're they for?
❓ How do accelerators work?
❓ What does accelerator research look like?

Please ask questions!
As the name suggests, the goal of a particle accelerator is to speed up charged particles. We can only accelerate _charged_ particles because we rely on electric & magnetic forces to do so.

We most often accelerate electrons or protons, but any charged particle/ion is fair game!
Once these particles are moving quickly, we can use them to:

⚛️ Search for new particles like the Higgs boson or dark matter
🔬 Study the structure of matter
⛑️ Make possible x-rays and other medical imaging, treat cancer
🍏 Increase the shelf-life and safety of produce

& more!
