🧵Fellow humanists: do you care that the largest academic publishers in the world are suing the government of India for allowing their people to access free online libraries? Do you care that Harvard & Oxford UPs have “taken down” online libraries? tinyurl.com/4krbkubu #crimes
Fellow humanists: do you care that one of the richest unis in the US stood by & said nothing after one of the fiercest advocates for free information was prosecuted for wire fraud for daring to make knowledge open & that they, @MIT, called the police & that he committed suicide?
Fellow humanists: do you care that some of the richest unis in the world, @Harvard_Press & @UniofOxford, have used US copyright laws to “take down” online libraries that provide access to everyone in the Global South & your students who can’t afford access to your own books!

🧵1/ We are deeply disturbed that @Harvard_Press issued a DMCA takedown order against Z Library, a so-called "pirate" library that provides critical access to knowledge across the world to those who can't afford access, nor can their universities. tinyurl.com/zfdpn32n
2/ The Digital Milennium Copyright Act is one of the most heinous acts ever passed by the US Congress & Aaron Swartz, an important advocate for #OpenAccess who sacrificed his own life for his commitments to public knowledge, wrote eloquently against it. tinyurl.com/2p9py52x
3/ We are very familiar with this subject because we fought @VersoBooks & @thenewpress when they issued a DMCA takedown order against a publication of Swartz's writings, "Raw Thought," that had been published free online & in print: punctumbooks.com/blog/the-boy-w… Why did they do this?

ANYBOOKS -Best Alternative 📚

If you are a book addict like me, it's no doubt that getting the best, yet free books library like the ANYBOOKS app has been difficult since they brought down their server. Good news, I've got an alternative for you. #BookTwitter

Open thread!
There are arguably 100s of book libraries out there, which are mostly tied to subscriptions or do not allow unlimited downloads. E.g, Chapter 1 is close to any book 📚 but is limited to 3 free downloads, and to access the unlimited library, one has to subscribe.
I mean, I would recommend Chapter 1, if you have money for subscription , max of 4k naira annually.

But, If you are in need of unlimited access to books and downloads and I do not mean "Gutenberg books", #booktwt

I'm seeing a lot of memes related to gas prices being shared today. It makes sense. Not only are high gas prices a source of extreme frustration, but memes are an easy and satisfying way to capture and share what are often complex ideas and feelings. 🧵1/
Most people don't think twice about engaging with these informational amuse-bouches. They often seem harmless and dismissible - which may be one reason why these image based info-nuggets have become a popular tool for spreading disinformation & hate. 🧵2/ axios.com/2021/02/23/mem…
"For years there's been growing concern that deepfakes (doctored pictures/videos) would become truth's greatest threat. Instead memes have proven 2B a more effective tool in spreading misinfo b/c they're easier to produce & harder to moderate using artificial intelligence." 🧵 3/

Due to the pandemic and whatnot you may not have visited your local public library in a while.

So come with me on a virtual library tour, courtesy of stock photography, to see what we do for a living... #librarytwitter
Libraries are of course information resource centres, but in many ways they are so much more. To get the best out of them you need to really know your way around the stacks.
The enquiries desk is normally your first stop in a library, and this is where you will meet The Angry Librarian! Why is she angry? Because you keep asking her stupid questions!

Well this is an interesting outreach predicament… I’ll admit, some cutesy animal talk makes me cringe, but it’s usefulness in scicomm CANNOT be denied. Making a topic silly or cute can make it accessible
Particularly when you’re talking about snakes and spiders and other phobia-inducing animals that are (often) not looking for a fight and/or harmless, this cute-ification can help reduce the intimidation factor
This can (and has, to some extent) been applied to books, with frequent exclamations of "Absolute unit!" and "chonky," etc., and the professional pushback has been isolated

To add - you don't necessarily need to have a solution at the ready when you criticize something. However, it's one thing to point out issues and another to habitually tear down the people trying to do the work while pointing out said issues.
On a related #LibraryTwitter note, it's 1 thing to use the platform that you built on here to put issues on people's radar. It is another to weaponize your platform to tear down individuals who are trying to do the work to the point where they have to lock or leave their account.
There's a fine line between affecting change through mobilizing your followers and affecting change through weaponizing your followers. Intent and impact both matter in that fine line division.

This morning I'm attending "Using Digital Humanities to Tell Stories" @AsalhConvention. Panelists include @cheylonkwoods @kenvi_phillips, @drpezster and @bookworme7787. #asalh2020 #libraries #archives #librarytwitter
Haykal: DH is an intesection of humanities and arts disciplines and technology. Involves examining how digital tools can be applied to humanities and how these subjects can influence knowledge of computing (Kirschenbaum 2010). DH brings the academy to the community.
Haykal: Digital exhibits are an example of DH at work. Mimic a physical exhibit but can be broader, using lots of media. Convey a particular narrative. You are content curator and digital manager. Some tools include Omeka, CurateScape, or website builder (Wix, WordPress, etc.)

I was asked by a friend today about what I was doing the last few weeks as she could not understand how I was busy 8+ hours per day with the library closed. Here is a little run down of #librarylife as a #WFH #programminglibrarian /1
The first few days of closure were spent emailing dozens of people (performers, speakers, authors, publicists, community partners) to update them about the cancellation of programs that had been in the works for months. This was pretty depressing. /2
At the same time Senior Staff, of which I am a part, were making plans about how to pivot and make sure we could still serve our community. This meant investigating new software, services and figuring out the best ways to communicate with staff and community members.

The #Reads for the Rest of Us list for Dec is coming soon @MsMagazine! I'm also working on the mother of all "most anticipated" reads (by women, #TGNC, #queer, #fat, #immigrant, #neurodivergent, international, and otherwise underrepresented writers) of 2020 list.
It's a big job! I have over 300 titles that I am sifting thru; so many look fantastic. #Fiction, #nonfiction, #poetry, and more. Some I've already #read, others not yet. I've heard from or reached out to over 65 #publishers and #publicists, they are working hard for you!
Do I know about your #newbook? Message me, email me, Tweet me, if you're not sure. My goal is to help raise visibility of historically marginalized #writers. I'm so lucky to get to learn about and read your amazing work along the way!

Had a librarian first today, and wouldn't mind some feedback from the #librarytwitter hivemind.

So a regular patron comes to me today. I know her better than a lot of my patrons--she's in the book club I run and I've heard some of her life story. 1/
She's not good with computers, and wants my help getting her dog certified as a service animal. She says that a man told her that she coud pay $59 online and get it certified, then she could take him to hotels and such. 2/
Her big concern is during hurricane season--last year when we evacuated she got turned away from several motels because of her dog.

So I ask if her dog is really a service dog. As in, gone through training. She says yes, that it is very well behaved. 3/

Thread: Another overview amazing #Muslim *female* achievement.

Did you know the first university in the world was built by a Muslim woman approx 1200 years ago?

This is the story of Fatima Al-Fihiri (800–880 CE). #BadassWoman #twitterstorians

1/15
2. Daughter of a wealthy businessman, the family moved from Tunisia to Fez, Morocco during the rule of King Idriss II. When both her husband and father died, Fatima and her sister inherited a fortune.

They chose to spend their inheritance on building educational institutions.
3. In 859, Fatima built the Al-Qayrawan #Mosque, decorated in the Andalusian style with Kufic calligraphy (early style) engraved throughout. At 3,000 sq ft, it can fit 22,000 people.

She stacked it with Islamic works (Qur’ans, #Hadith collections, etc).
