Light Pollution - a thread.
Today will see members of the House of Lords debate an amendment to the #EnvironmentBill that would require national targets on reducing #LightPollution. Read the thread below for just some of the reasons why targets are needed. 1/

Invertebrates
#LightPollution impacts invertebrates at all stages of their lives. Areas lit by streetlights have 50% less caterpillars. One third of insects attracted to lights die as a result. And nocturnal pollinator visits are reduced by over 60%. buglife.org.uk/campaigns/ligh… 2/
Mammals
Hedgehogs avoid lighting, restricting their movement. #LightPollution causes many problems for bats, disrupting their roost, feeding and navigation. 3/

About a year ago we had the 1st #covidlockdown in Germany

I'm the stay-home homeschooling dad - my wife is a medical doctor

But I could work @ night which I do often anyway

I did measure the night sky brightness and found it had decreased compared to before lockdown (1/12)
so in March 2017 it was less bright than in 2020 (see figure for zenith brightness)

this is surprising because we would expect light emission and #lightpollution to increase like shown in the paper we co-authored with @skyglowberlin and others

advances.sciencemag.org/content/3/11/e…

(2/12)
using night-time light satellite time series data (VIIRS DNB) we saw an increase in most major towns along the route we measured

you can check such data with @skyglowberlin tool:

lighttrends.lightpollutionmap.info

this was what we eexpected (3/12)

What happens in #OpenWaters is difficult to monitor.
Yet, here you clearly see the #LightPollution (likely many⛴️) JUST outside the #TerritorialWaters of #Ecuador and #Peru in 2019

New paper about COVID-19 effects in #lightpollution
mdpi.com/2072-4292/13/2… Leaded by Maximo Bustamante @iaa_csic with the participation of @cefalopodo @KevinJGaston @jvm22811194 @AliciaPelegrina @jon_bennie and myself. Theard:👇 Image
This is the first article produced with the SQM with filters of the Sky Quality Office of the @iaa_csic iaa.csic.es/page/starlight
The most important things are:
* Light pollution can be used to trace economic activity drop because of COVID-19
* Several limitations on current satellite, mainly because of their flyby time and lack of spectral sensitivity.
*That can be solved with ground sky brighntess sensors

First some background: I study artificial light in the outdoor environment. I'm interested in where it comes from, where it goes, what impact it has, and what we can do about #LightPollution.
The night face of Earth is radically different from when life evolved. In proportional terms, it's one of the most dramatic physical changes humans have made to the environment. Image
