Olympique Lyonnais’ 2020/21 accounts cover a season when they finished 4th in Ligue 1 and reached the Coupe de France quarter-finals, but did not participate in Europe after the previous season ended early in March due to COVID-19 with #TeamOL in 7th place. Some thoughts follow.
Due to a combination of COVID and no European competition, #TeamOL pre-tax loss increased from €36m to €109m, as revenue fell €63m (35%) from €181m to €118m and profit on player sales dropped €38m from €83m to €45m. Partly offset by €18m (6%) decrease in operating costs.
#TeamOL revenue fall was driven by gate receipts, down €34m (94%) from €36m to €2m, and broadcasting, down €29m (29%) from €98m to €69m. Commercial held up pretty well, only slipping 1% to €47m. Including player trading, revenue dropped €94m (35%) from €272m to €177m.

Despite a €99m (15%) fall in revenue in 2020, partly due to the COVID pandemic, #PSG wage bill still rose €43m (12%) to €414m, the club’s highest ever. This was more than 3 times as much as the closest challenger in France, Lyon with €132m, representing 29% of Ligue 1 wages.
#PSG €414m wage bill is the second highest in Europe, only surpassed by #FCBarcelona €443m (before their La Liga salary cap challenges), but more than clubs like #MCFC €401m, #RealMadrid €378m, #LFC €371m, #FCBayern €340m, #MUFC €324m and #CFC €323m.
COVID-19 was particularly tough on French clubs, as Ligue 1 was the only major European league to cancel its season in response to the pandemic. Revenue of €1.6 bln was lowest of the “Big 5” in 2019/20, far below Premier League €5.1 bln, but also €469m behind Serie A €2.1 bln
#Ligue1 post-tax loss more than doubled from €126m to €270m, as revenue fell €319m (17%) from €1.9 bln to €1.6 bln, while expenses rose €83m (3%), mainly due to €118m growth in player amortisation. Partly offset by €249m rise in exceptionals, including government loans.
Overall #Ligue1 has been consistently unprofitable, only making money once in the last 9 years (a €20m surplus in 2016). The last four seasons have been especially brutal with a €648m aggregate loss in this period, averaging €162m a year.

Before I dive in, some upfront info. I am not an auditor, accountant or statistician nor am I a financial journalist. I am merely a concerned football fan who likes to read up on the financial side of sport. PS, getting data in this country is like pulling hens teeth. Let's go.
To begin with, there are three main income streams for sports leagues and federations. These are broadcasting rights, commercial income (sponsorship & advertising) plus match day revenue (tickets & hospitality). There are also sometimes grants.. Onto the #AbsaPrem then..
It looks like #Ligue2 in France will get an extra two teams from next season after the French Football League voted in favor of expanding the competition feom 20 to 22 teams.
Expansion of #Ligue2 came following an LFP general assembly meeting of clubs from the top two tiers held yesterday (Wednesday). Some 57% of clubs are said to have voted in favour of the reform, which has to be approved by the French Football Federation (FFF)
This means that no #Ligue2 club will be relegated to the third-tier National league from the 2019-20 campaign, while the top two teams from the National are promoted. This means that Orléans and Le Mans remain in Ligue 2 for 2020-21, while Pau and Dunkerque come up from National.
After the decision to end the French football season, I thought that it might be interesting to look at the financial position of clubs in Ligue 1. This analysis will highlight the financial dominance of Paris-Saint Germain, who have won 7 league titles in 8 years.
Overall #Ligue1 is unprofitable, losing a total of €126m in 2018/19, a small improvement on the previous season’s €159m deficit. There has only been one profitable season in the last 8 years, which was 2015/16 which achieved a small €20m surplus.
