Linguist here. It looks like one of our biggest issues in this pandemic is convincing people that:
1. it is deadly serious
2. the consequences of their actions may be life or death.

I have some suggestions about how to talk about #COVID19 to help with this message. /1

I wonder where the cut-off is between linguists who learned about IPA as phonetics before they knew about the beer. #linguisttwitter

(I first encountered the beer a few years into my linguistics program, so phonetics came first.)
Which one did you encounter first?

Hey #linguisttwitter, words with pronunciation pairs for which one pronunciation is interpreted as genuine/emphatic in meaning but the other is not? Is this a general thing?

E.g., I've heard that Canadians may say /ˈsɔɹi/ when they are sorry, but /ˈsɑɹi/ when they are not. 1/3
I came to think of "snygg" ('pretty, good-looking') in Swedish, which is pronounced /snʏɡː/ but sometimes /snœɡː/ (even spelled "snögg") when you don't really mean it: "Oh, is that a new sweater? {Snygg=👍;Snögg=👎}". 2/3
Not thinking so much about emphatic pronouns and such, more like the function of phoneme quality (rather than prosody etc.) to signal these things. 3/3
