So the little mermaid controversy has heated up. However there’s something that people brought up that made me want to make this thread. People are claiming that the reason people do not like the casting of the little mermaid is because the actress is black. It’s only racists -
That don’t like her. “So if you don’t want to be labeled a racist, you better not give any criticism towards this casting choice.” Basically it’s the whole shaming people into liking something tactic. Which never works. But then some other people brought up something that-

Le sexisme, le racisme, les haines diverses, sont un obscurantisme en plus d’être des systèmes qui créent et justifient les violences. Je suis atterrée de constater chaque jour l’incohérence profonde des argumentaires quand ces systèmes cherchent à ce défendre.
La position dominante c’est vraiment le règne de la médiocrité intellectuelle.

Here's the thing about people objecting to recastings of fairy tales with non-white, or disabled, or otherwise reimagined protagonists: they know little and care less about the long, cross-cultural and robust history of those tales.
(I'm leaving side the racism inherent in their reactions for the moment, because it's so screamingly obvious in every tweet they make, and other people have demolished their claims of "I'm not a racist but..." far more effectively than this white woman could. #morepowertothem )
Back to fairy/folk tales. It's not just white fragility on display here, although god knows... it's a fundamental ignorance & lack of damn respect for humanity's capacity for telling stories about the human condition that transcend johnny-come-lately artificial racial categories.
