I was inspired to write this blog after I witnessed my neighbor's outdoor pet #cat killed a #bird under my feeder. A heated argument ensued. I know nothing has changed because I still scare him out of my backyard. I've counted 9 different cats in my backyard, here is one

#ChristmasIsland #reptiles are another great ARWH case study this #ScienceWeek. Lister's #gecko and the blue-tailed #skink only exist in captivity (only ~1000 of each!) after environmental pressures sent them #ExtinctInTheWild. #WildlifeHealth
When astute rangers at breeding facilities on #ChristmasIsland noticed some of the #lizards were dying, the species was left literally on the brink of #extinction. #WildlifeHealth
Working with @Parks_Australia, Jess Agius, @Sydney_Uni and others, the team were able to identify a novel bacteria, Enterococcus lacertideformus, and show the widespread infection of multiple reptile species on the island. #WildlifeHealth sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/n…

#WildlifeCSI in the form of diagnostic pathology is a key part of the ARWH work too. It helps in many conservation contexts, including species recovery programs, for state conservation agencies, #wildlife rehabilitators, and scientists. #CSI

Me and the family went to ZSL #LondonZoo today, had a great time and saw all the #animals. Here's a short thread. Some highlights: Western lowland gorilla, Sumatran tiger, Komodo dragon, Galapagos giant tortoise...
Just a few of the literally 100s of birds at #LondonZoo: Woolly-necked stork, Northern crested caracaras (big, semi-terrestrial American falcons) and Red and yellow barbet. Barbets are members of the woodpecker group; some are close kin of toucans. #birds #animals #zoos
Some #reptiles: the remarkably yellow Cuming's water monitor, an awesome Reticulated python (cue #HarryPotter link), Big-headed turtle (able to climb, prehensile-tailed) and Rio Fuerte beaded lizard... #lizards #snakes #squamates #turtles

My fave bird is the endangered Visayan tarictic hornbill 🥰 In the wild, this species can now only be found in Negros and Panay islands. Follow Talarak Foundation on IG for news on their captive breeding program for these. #IBD2020 #BiodiversityDay
Staying with island endemics theme, here's a Visayan spotted deer. They're endangered. Endemic to West Visayan region but presently only known from forest patches in Negros & Panay. @silliman_u CENTROP has a captive breeding program for this species. #IBD2020 #BiodiversityDay

Have enjoyed reading some of the work by Davis & Grayson on quantifying #color, hue, % coverage in #newts and other animals.
They used Fovea Pro, a Photoshop add in. The newer version (QIA-64) costs ~$800 😬

Am also considering the methods of Paterson & Blouin-Demers where they quantify continuous variation in throat color in #lizards using Adobe & ultimately analysis in #imageJ (but haven't had time to test it out yet)

Watched this male prairie lizard (Sceloporus consobrinus) visually defend his territory with head bobs and push ups. The area in my mom’s garden was at least 10 m long and contained 2+ females, which were in turn displaying to one another. 1/n

While all this is going on between the Young and the Restless lizards, another #squamate , a southern black racer (Coluber constrictor priapus) slipped into the garden.
