Thank you to the #CaliforniaJournalismAwards for honoring two articles I freelanced for @latimes’ Times OC last year about two often-overlooked towns, San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. Congratulations to all the honorees. #localnewsmatters
The 2nd place article is a piece I did in February 2021 about the tragic death of Steven Riley, a homeless man who'd lived in San Clemente longer than most of the city councilmembers combined and died on the steps of the senior center. lat.ms/2OUEd01
The 4th place article is a piece I did last May about a long-planned development in San Juan Capistrano that's proceeding with homes but not the equestrian center voters were promised 10 years ago. Is the horse community "dying a death of a thousand cuts"? lat.ms/3PrVvMH

We started with a clip from the super helpful Turnout 2020 @BrennanCenter webinar. We listened to @evettewashere give a great rundown of the @knightfdn study of America's non-voters.
youtube.com/watch?v=DG70_I…
Non-voters:
- 38% do not believe their vote matters.
- Are less infromed, overwhelmed or turned off by negative news.
- Do not know the voting process.
- Less trusting of voting system.

What part of the @knightfdn study on non-voters stood out to you?

So, in my line of business the @JustinTrudeau announcement for 10% wage support ($25k over 3 months) will not save 1 job or 1 business including mine. I am disheartened. Watching other politicians congratulate themselves on "leadership" was equally disheartening but unsurprising.
Fyi - this is probably the longest tweet ever written. Sorry. Thanks for sticking to the end. Feel free to pass along, share, retweet.etc.
Like many business owners this past week, I was in the position of telling valued employees there was no more work today. I went home and wept like I have never done before. I have never felt so helpless, never felt so unsure of my future, never felt so scared for my family.
