The news about declared emergencies on #monkeypox shouldn't alarm, but they should remind us that we know better so we have to DO better.

Here's why... (thread)
First, let's talk about why #monkeypox is a bigger deal. (And no, it's not because it's deadly.) It's a big deal because this is a virus of inconvenience and frankly, while the human race can do amazing things, we haven't yet figured out how to deal with inconvenience...
Deadly viruses gain more attention. Viruses of inconvenience struggle with their messaging. "You'll be down for a week" is far less worrisome than, "you'll probably die and everyone will mourn you."

And we've never been good at preparing for worrisome viruses. (Ahem, #HPV.)

.@NewYorker published a piece on #LongCovid last month that drew significant and well deserved criticism. In response to our fierce objections to @DhruvKhullar's reporting they devoted today's ENTIRE Letters section to responses from me and @NickGuthe. newyorker.com/magazine/2021/…
My Letter to the Editor:

The New Yorker’s article on Long covid, in which I was a central subject, was a profound affront to everyone suffering the long-term sequelae of even mild and asymptomatic cases of covid-19 (“The Damage Done,” September 27th).
1/
The piece included no interviews with doctors or scientists directly investigating Long covid, and no interviews with patients battling the disease.

The @NewYorker chose not to publish my Letter to the Editor regarding @DhruvKhullar's piece on #LongCovid.

A 🧵...

The @NewYorker’s first article on #LongTermCovid, published in the September 27, 2021 issue, was a profound affront to everyone suffering the very real long-term sequalae of even mild and asymptomatic cases of #Covid_19.
2/
It is riddled with errors and was reported under false pretenses. @DhruvKhullar pitched this story to me as a personal profile – documenting how I started the world’s largest Covid movement, @Survivor_Corps.

Let's talk about breakthrough symptomatic infections in fully vaxxed adults...

Today @SurvivorCorps will meet with the @CDCgov to present our data and ask for changes in policy to reflect real world evidence.

@CDCgov is only tracking hospitalized cases so we did it instead.
/
We ran a poll of our 170K member group and had 1949 fully vaxxed adults participate.

Our Key Takeaways:

-Vaccines Work (but not all the time)

-Of 1949 fully vaxxed adults there were 44 breakthrough symptomatic cases (we couldn't measure asymptomatics for obvious reasons)
2/
-Vaccines will likely keep you from acute symptomatic Covid needing hospitalization

-*HOWEVER* 55% of breakthrough symptomatic cases led to Long Covid (this is staggering)

-(Narrator Voice: If I had J&J I would want a booster)

My 12yo just lost an adult front tooth and his other teeth are loose... it turns out from vasculature damage 9 months after Covid.

Omg. PLEASE... I beg of you, take this seriously. For you. For your kids. For everyone.
I have been dealing with Covid in one way or another since Day 1. Today might have broken me.

For all those who asked... The bottom right front tooth is no longer there. The left front isn't looking great either. 😥

For the love of God, #MaskUp America.

This, and all the other damage from Covid... It's not worth it. Skip Holidays 2020 so we can all live to see 2021!!! Image
