Another boat in distress in the #Maltese SAR zone! A wooden boat with 28 people incl. 3 women & a baby left Zuwarah in #Libya last night. At 21.10 CEST, after receiving their GPS position, we informed the authorities. We hope this time they will launch a timely rescue operation!
The #Italian coastguard responded to the distress call! The boat is indeed in the #Maltese SAR zone, but just 38 nautical miles from #Lampedusa. We hope that this #SAR cooperation will lead to a successful rescue and that the people will be brought to the closest port of safety. Image
🔴We talked to the people on board & to the Italian coastguard again. Although earlier they said they had started a rescue operation, they are NOT taking any action to rescue the boat off #Lampedusa. #Malta authorities are also inactive. This is an illegal act of non-assistance!

Breaking!

At 23.35h CEST the #Maltese authorities informed us that they have spotted the wooden boat from the air! They also confirmed that they will launch a #rescue operation. We hope that the boat will be quickly found – water is entering the boat and the people on board are scared.
The situation is deteriorating rapidly, the boat is at risk of capsizing! We also informed the Italian authorities as the boat is much closer to #Italy than Malta. No time can be lost: rescue for the 90 lives should take priority and must be launched immediately! @guardiacostiera

This afternoon we were called by approximately 50 people in distress coming from #Libya, incl. about 20 women & several children. Communication was difficult but once we received a GPS position we informed the #Maltese authorities at 18.10h and later also the #Italian coastguard.
For several hours now contact to the boat is lost. We fear that #European authorities are once again orchestrating a refoulement operation where those fleeing are monitored by #EU aerial assets, then intercepted by their #Libyan allies & returned to torture camps in a warzone.
Last night, we tried repeatedly to re-connect to the boat carrying about 50 people. We could never reach them & believe they were intercepted by the so-called #Libyan CG. The #Med remains a black box where the mass dying & Europe's human rights violations are hidden away.

About two hours ago, we were called by a boat in distress in the #Maltese #SAR zone. The boat had left from #Libya over 23 hours ago and carries approx. 40 people. We alerted the Maltese authorities shortly after, at 22.33h CEST. We remain in direct contact with the boat. Image
At 1:07 CEST RCC #Malta sent us an email confirming that they will sent an asset to #RESCUE the people in distress. Their boat is still moving but the people are tired and exausted. They repeatedly ask for help and when somebody will arrive to rescue them.
Where is the rescue? Boat still at sea & people in panic. They say some are "near death" - they need immediate medical care! The situation is urgent but #Malta is not informing us about #SAR procedures. They were informed of this distress in Maltese SAR zone over 6h ago!

Once again, Alarm Phone was alerted to a boat in distress in the #Maltese #SAR zone. There are approx 100ppl who report that they are at sea for 3 days already! We informed RCC #Malta at 13.00 CEST. Image

We know that several aerial assets of #EUNAVFORMED have been in the area already since yesterday but have not engaged in rescue yet! An asset from the Armed Forces of Malta is also in the vicinity. #safepassage

In the early morning the Alarmphone was in contact with a boat with 75ppl in the SAR zone of #Malta. Now the boat is not reachable anymore. Since hours MRCC Malta refuses info if they spotted the boat and finally started the rescue operation. Image
The people tell us they spent 36h on sea now, they are exhausted, hungry and thirsty. They did not see one rescue asset yet. MRCC #Malta received all relevant info: we demand immediate rescue by them now!
First Alarm Phone #SOS alert to MRCC #Malta was at 5.55 CEST. We provided info including the satellite phone number of the boat in distress. Still no rescue! Non-assistance even in Maltese #SAR zone?

#Solidarity with the 75 survivors on #Maridive601. After 3 days they are still not allowed to disembark. Although they were in distress in international waters, #Italian and #Maltese authorities ignored them. This is a violation of international law and #maritime conventions! Image
Tunisia is not a safe place for #refugees. Yet, ppl on board need medical attention, food, water and shelter. Due to #EU negligence we have no other option than to ask Tunisian authorities to let them disembark in Zarzis & to guarantee that they will not be deported to #Libya!
We also call on European authorities to respond to distress calls with adequate rescue instead of non-assistance and to re-settle these people to #Europe, where many cities have declared their #solidarity. Full statement here: alarmphone.org/en/2019/06/03/…

#Solidarity with survivors & #Tunisian rescuers! 75 ppl are still not allowed to disembark in Zarzis after being rescued by the Tunisian ‘Maridive 601’. According to Tunisian fishermen & the NGO FTDES, the boat was ignored by #Italian & #Maltese authorities when in distress. Image
The 75 ppl fled from Libya & are stranded on the ‘Maridive’ with 3 of them suffering from severe health issues. Together with #FTDES we condemn the “#European practice of non-assistance and restriction of maritime rescue operations” which create these situations.
We also protest the fact that even when disembarked, the rights of the 75 are dramatically violated, as in #Tunisia they cannot find the rights and protection they urgently need. Find here our full statement and further images: tiny.cc/7cwm7y
