Day 3 - #Rhino resurgence in the #Terai !!

The Greater One-Horned #Rhinoceros is the second largest #mammal in #India after the #Elephant. Its distribution once ranged from the flood plains of the Indus to the Indo-Burmese border.

However the loss of #grassland #habitat resulted in only a small population remaining in North East India and #Nepal. The species was totally extirpated from the Indian Terai in the 19th century, with the last rhino there being shot in the #Pilibhit Forest Division in 1878.

Following this extirpation, #Dudhwa National Park was surveyed for its habitat suitability for the species and finally in 1984, the Addl. CWLW U.P was tasked to capture 6 rhinos from the #Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, #Assam by tranquilizing them.

Here is a list of 45 #birds, 22 #mammals, and 30 non-avian #reptiles that are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED due to feral or pet #cats

first off, I'd like to highlight that "feral #cats on islands are responsible for at least 14% global #bird, #mammal, and reptile extinctions and are the principal threat to almost 8% of critically endangered birds, mammals, and reptiles"
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…
AND within our own lifetimes, North America has lost more than one in four of its birds. These are not all critically endangered now, but these trends are pointing to #extinction

Welcome back to another episode of the #WildAboutFacts series. Today, we are taking over your feed with pictures and #trivia of one of the most alluring creatures from the #wild, the #RedPanda.

Join us, share your #photographs of the #Firefox of the #Himalayas.

Its distinctive fur has earned this species monikers such as #Firefox, Firecat, or Fire-coloured Cat. Arguably, the #RedPanda is the only true #Panda, as the #GiantPanda, which is believed to be closely related, belongs to the #bear family.

Around half of the #RedPanda’s natural habitat lies in the Eastern #Himalayas#Nepal, #Sikkim, northern #WestBengal, #Bhutan, and #ArunachalPradesh.

Its remaining home is in northern #Myanmar and a few provinces of central #China.

Curious for opinions from #wildlife #biology folks. Am teaching Wildlife Populations for the 2nd time this Spring and want to adjust labs a bit.

Currently, labs focus on understanding pop growth, CMR & other density estimates, etc. Most are Excel heavy.

#WildlifePops
Last year, we had two outdoor labs around estimating #squirrel population densities on campus, which students really enjoyed. This year am adding another outdoor lab around using #frog calling indices. (Yes, we shall be going out in the snow!)

#WildlifePops
I also think our students could use more practice learning local species & scientific names, esp. bc not all get to take all the animal-ologies. So..

Should I incorporate 1 - 2 specimen labs on important #wildlife species? (have good #mammal #bird #herp #fish collections)
