ON NE FAIT PAS DE #manel / #manference EN 2022

I want to call on @ECPR to review recent tweets by @Gia_Passarelli, a member of the Executive Committee.

Prof. Passarelli received criticism after organizing a #manel at the recent @sisp__ conference.

In my opinion, his demeaning responses break the ECPR Code of Conduct.

Prof. Passarelli's responses came as replies to two threads under tweets criticizing the manel from @duncanmcdonnell and @CasMudde

Initially mostly defensive, Prof. Passarelli's comments quickly took a nasty character.

For example, he accused post-doctoral researcher @georgovenizelos of being ignorant for pointing out that Italian academia has problems with gender diversity.

🇵🇱⚖️🇪🇺🧵And we're off, the Constitutional Tribunal is hearing the case P 7/20 on the conformity of CJEU interim measures with the Polish Constitution. Judge Stanisław Piotrowicz leads the proceedings with Sochański, Jędrzejewski, Piskorski and Stelina flanking him #manel (1/x)
Interestingly, one of these judges - Justyn Piskorski - has been appointed as a replacement of a judge who was appointed unlawfully in an analogous situation to that of judge Muszyński, the "hero" of ECtHR Xero Flor judgment.
Justyn Piskorski also continues to straight-facedly teach criminal law at the law faculty of my alma mater (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań). I wonder how his lectures on constitutional aspects of criminal law look like these days.

Our paper on #Manels in Urology just published @EUplatinum. For those who do not believe #Manel is a major problem in urology, I sincerely encourage you to read this. (1/n) Free download link:…
In this study, we reviewed one year of conferences/webinars organized by major urological associations and societies. We investigated the overall proportion of #Manels, which was defined as the composition of all-male chairs/moderators plus all-male speakers. (2/n)
Among the 285 meeting sessions being included, 63.5% of them were #Manels! The mean percentages of male faculty were mostly >85% across different associations/societies, and >85% across the different subspecialties. (3/n)

Will we EVER learn about #PublicHealth?
3rd wave “expert” committee is nearly-ALL #Pediatricians (to keep Devi Shetty’s non-#evidence-based assertion on #children will be entirely affected), #AllMale #Manel, nearly-all #clinicians headed by #PrivateSector #Cardiologist
I request this committee members:
- Please QUESTION Devi Shetty’s credentials to lead this
- Please hold to account #Manel #AllMale membership
- Please include #RuralHealth #CommunityHealth #PublicHealth
- Expertise is NOT only CLINICAL; also social; include grounded voices
Unfortunately no time & bandwidth; but putting this out there
We need:
- campaign for a DIVERSE expert committee including #Citizen #CommunityEngagement #Dalit #Adivasi voices
- Devi Shetty’s position as Chair is NOT tenable; appoint a #PublicHealth expert in his place

Happy to share our new paper in @CMAJ :

"Caring for people who inject drugs when they are admitted to hospital"…

It's #OpenAccess (so anyone can read it), but here's a 🧵anyway with the key points:

#MedTwitter #AddictionMedicine #HarmReduction
The number of people who inject drugs in 🇨🇦 is increasing, from 130,000 in 2011 to 171,900 in 2016

(as estimated by @BrendanJacka @SarahLarney @jasongrebely & team)…
The rate of hospitalizations for severe injecting-related bacterial infections, like endocarditis, is increasing even faster

e.g. in Ontario:…

& in New Brunswick:…

There are thousands of journalists and subject matter experts who are ready and willing to talk about anti-Asian violence and the Asian-American experience. Do better.
I get it; it’s hard to find people on a short timeline! A few tips:

1. Ask your colleagues and friends for recommendations.

2. Expand your networks in advance of the next big story.

3. Check out groups like @aaja who have resources and networks to help you diversify coverage.
I get that it’s hard to find sources on deadline, and often you end up with multiple outlets scrambling to book the same few voices. And sometimes you try your best, and you still end up with a #manel on gender. Plus, this is work that’s often unappreciated and uncompensated.

One thing I love about #KidneyWk in a brief tweetorial #AskASN
#KidneyWk and @ASNKidney never created a social media team or official social media ambassadors to cover the meeting.
So much of medicine is permission based, but there is no one to ask permission of off you want to tweet about #KidneyWk. There are no social media credentials or badge needed to complain about a speaker, a #manel, or Comic Sans on a slide #AskASN

Female surgeons no longer need to disguise themselves as men but gender bias is still rampant in surgery. What steps can surgeons take today to mitigate the effects of gender bias? A few strategies from our editorial @BJSurgery…
This won't get better with as the # of women in surgery increases. More women in medicine has not resulted in gender equity in leadership. We can’t wait passively on the pipeline – the pipeline leaks. Or more accurately, women are pushed out of the pipe the higher it goes.
Starting with trainees: women are discouraged from surgery, receive less OR autonomy, and more often receive reference letters of minimal assurance

Strategy #1: use standardized reference letters focused on effort not appearance. If writing narrative letters, follow these tips
