Equality vs Equity: durable obstacles to equity: myths of neutrality, objectivity, colourblind, allwhite panels/#manels.
Big obstacle?
The gap betw principles & ‘how-to’. Why would those who have comfortably coexisted with, benefitted from, rationalized status quo, be the change?
Smart people admit there’s no level playing field.

Repeatedly reminded of fmr Bennington College prez Liz Coleman’s claim that when it comes to change, academe is often notable for “learned helplessness”.
If playing field isn’t level what is to be done?
Academe: path dependency
“Why don’t we have any fresh ideas around here?”

Reproduction of sameness impacts ideas, perspectives, creativity, innovation.

Our paper on #Manels in Urology just published @EUplatinum. For those who do not believe #Manel is a major problem in urology, I sincerely encourage you to read this. (1/n) Free download link: authors.elsevier.com/a/1dBNY14kplnU…
In this study, we reviewed one year of conferences/webinars organized by major urological associations and societies. We investigated the overall proportion of #Manels, which was defined as the composition of all-male chairs/moderators plus all-male speakers. (2/n)
Among the 285 meeting sessions being included, 63.5% of them were #Manels! The mean percentages of male faculty were mostly >85% across different associations/societies, and >85% across the different subspecialties. (3/n)

Y'alls HR managers are busy organising Women's Day events, meanwhile the files with sexual harassment complaints are so dusty that one can grow beans on them. We see you #InternationalWomensDay

And we know it's the already overworked and underpaid women in your orgs running with the women's day initiatives. Hamuoni haya? #InternationalWomensDay

Back in September 2018 I asked this question, which lead to a twitter discussion, which lead to me losing my job.

The Q wasn't about Bunce really but about whether, when you have a policy that is about empowering women, you change the definition to suit a man?
People who responded, smart people, usually robust economists said things like this.

I was surprised...but I could why they might fence sit, or SEK to be (apparently) inclusive, since the #manels question is fairly minor.

But when it really matters people might say no?..no?
Like when someone who has lived all their life as a man and has recently "become" a woman asks for a seat on a forum where women have a chance to talk to medics about how women are treated in pregnancy and childbirth.

You'd say no then right?

Does it have to take a national movement against racism for the discrimination BIPOC women face in medicine to be taken seriously?
Does it have to take a national movement for “all these disparities women face in the workplace are worse for intersectional women” to move from a one-liner in #DEI work to the forefront and for #SystemicRacism to be relevant in the women in medicine movement?
When Black women spoke up about the discrimination we face and asked for allies to hold systems and institutions accountable, why is our go to answer “academia takes time?”

Thread: I don't who needs to hear this, but something has got to give on these #manels. It is not enough to shrug your shoulders and pass the blame on to the organisers. Please ask about the panel composition before you agree to be on a public discussion. You have agency! 1/n
Please turn down invites for male only sessions - this is the only way we will shift the needle. This includes webinars, panel discussions, TV debates, industry roundtables, all of it. You can push the organisers to be more mindful and inclusive 2/n
Often the worst kind of bigotry is the passive deeply entrenched kind, when the organisers aren't being misogynists but it just didn't occur to them to have women on the panel, or they "don't know any qualified women" on the topic. That is always a bit of a cop-out. 3/n

Delighted to be in New York for the launch of #Trialwatch with brilliant @BarHumanRights colleagues @stephencragg1 & @SamuelZimran. BHRC conducts independent trial monitoring across many countries & we value the spotlight brought by trial observations.

Do say hi if you are here!
After a touch of stardust, the #Trialwatch panel has kicked off with a heavyweight #JournalismShouldNotBeACrime panel @MFFahmy11 @cdeloire @jrezaian @JameelJaffer @mariaressa chaired by Helena Kennedy QC. Chilling to hear experiences of journalists imprisoned. Why are they there?
As @MFFahmy11 talks about watching the world from the cage in the Egyptian courtroom, wondering whether the world is watching, a reminder why trial monitoring is so important. @BarHumanRights has monitored trials in Egypt and has raised concerns too on #fairtrials #cages.

Settling into Session 45: Special 150th Panel: The Future of Classics (Sesquicentennial Workshop, organized by Stephen Hinds, University of Washington, Seattle). Extremely excited for this panel! #AIASCS
Hinds talks about having students who haven't had a class that was entirely about dead people. His class was not about shoring up the dead white men, but getting inside the head of dead people & reading slowly. Hinds asks people to think about the near and distant future #AIASCS
Helen Catherine Cullyer talks about all the types of contributions to classics that are not currently getting properly credited -- online content, teachers at all levels, less traditional format. she also hopes we can DO something about diversity not just talk #AIASCS

As we talk about conference codes of conduct and creating more inclusive events and diverse stages—no more #manels!—I want to share a recent conference experience about an upcoming event at which I’ll be speaking and teaching. (thread)
Next week the @Fluxible UX conference is in Kitchener-Waterloo, near Toronto. Now in its 7th year, it promises “an inclusive, cooperative environment where everyone is welcomed, open dialogue is encouraged, and all perspectives are appreciated.” Let’s unpack that vision! (2/?)
The @Fluxible organizers realize that if “everyone is welcome” and “all perspectives are appreciated,” representation on stage matters. So, they put together a speaker lineup diverse in age, gender, ethnicity, industry, expertise, seniority, geography, and other qualities. (3/?)
