Could not be happier that @BorisJohnson's equality commission will look at the plight of #workingclass white boys; the educational attainment gap, #opportunity gap that limits social mobility in places like #Mansfield

#THANKYOU Boris. That is massive!

Since I was elected this has been one of my passions, and I've raised the #education challenge on particular countless times (inc ) and highlighted how disadvantaged white males are most likely to fall behind at #school, but how little this is recognised.
Chuffed @BorisJohnson will properly investigate this, cut through the negative atmosphere that has often prevented it from being discussed, and try to help some of the most disadvantaged communities to #LevelUp and boost #LifeChances. Hope to be able to contribute 👍 #ThankYou

1. Yesterday a journalist described #Mansfield to me as "the first blue brick in the red wall" - something I'm hugely proud of and even more so now that we've knocked it down and rebuilt in blue with some @bluecollartory_ foundations. Here's a why it shouldn't be a surprise:
2. Since I was elected in 17 I've been at pains to try and explain the difference between Labour voters in Islington and in Mansfield. It's not ideological up north, it's historic. Not #Socialism that drove the #Labour vote, but industry.
3. You've only got to watch an episode of #PeakyBlinders to get the gist of why Labour was born as a movement. Protecting workers, fighting for better conditions. Some of the leaders were socialists, but the workers were trying to improve their lot. To put food on the table.

A #brexit thread 👇

1. In 2017 we were invited to #No10 to talk to Gavin Barwell about our thoughts on things. I had a conversation with him on #Brexit that rings absolutely true now and is more relevant than ever - so I thought I'd share:
2. I said to him that #Brexit had redrawn 'party lines' - that right/left was now less relevant that #leave/#remain and we had to examine our 'core vote' on that basis. We had done well in the #Mansfield-esque seats and lost the Croydons, we needed to think about why.
3. I said to Barwell that there was no compromise that would keep both #remainers and #leavers happy. That we could not keep both audiences on board in the context of #Brexit and we should not try - it's impossible. We had to leave first, and then we could rebuild the coalition.
