How it started...

On this day, two years ago, I was hit head on by a distracted driver on the country highway by our home. My husband died instantly and I was careflighted to the local trauma center where I remained in critical condition. It was my fourth year of medical school
Over the next few months, as I dealt with the grief of losing my husband, I struggled to overcome my injuries - internal bleeding; open fracture of the femur, tibia, and fibula; and open fracture of the 5th digit of my (dominant) left hand at the MCP and DIP joints. I worked to
independently accomplish my activities of daily living when sitting on the side of the bed, transferring myself to the bedside commode, or feeding myself were feats in itself.

Last night, I worked my first night shift as an OBGYN resident and I find myself crying in realization

Can you imagine having to apply and pay $900 for a certification of your medical degree every year if you don't match? and taking an English proficiency test (OET) every 2 years? Well that's exactly what is occurring right now under the latest update of the @ECFMG_IMG . 1/6
ECFMG certification is how international medical graduates validate their medical degrees in the USA, to apply for the match. In order to acquire it we need to take Step1, Step2 and Step2 CS. Since the latter was removed, the @ECFMG_IMG needs to find new ways to certify us. 2/6
The new update from the @ECFMG_IMG states that the certification will be valid for one year and be permanent only after "successfully completes the first year of ACGME-accredited training", meaning if you don't match you would have to apply for certification with fees >$900.3/6

✨NRMP Match Tweetorial✨

Hey #MedStudentTwitter! It’s February—time for rank order lists! I’ve seen misconceptions about the Match, so here’s a #tweetorial about the Match & ROLs, including history, algorithms, and applicant considerations! #Match2021 #PedsMatch21 #MedTwitter
1. As complex as the Match seems, it wasn’t always that way. In the early to mid-1900s, there were more internship spots than candidates, and hospitals competed to acquire us applicants! By the 1940s, students were receiving offers as early as the start of 3rd year! Crazy, right?
2. Students could only have one offer at a time and would often have to make a decision on whether to accept it or turn it down within 24-48 hours. In 1945, a “Cooperative Plan” provided more uniformity to the process, but the system was still dysfunctional.

As the #residency interview season wraps up, applicants often ask, how do I let programs know I really like them? how do I increase my match chances?
It's not required and not sure if makes a difference but if it makes you feel better do it. Most important, be honest!(1/4)
Do not tell a program they are your first choice if they are not, and a program canNOT ask you where you are ranking them. See here for Match Communication Code of Conduct. (2/4) #match2021

Do NOT rank a program higher just because u think they ranked u high & u more likely to match there. Rank programs in order of YOUR TRUE PREFERENCE. The Match algorithm works to ur advantage so rank higher those u liked more even if reach. More tips nrmp.org/ranking-reside… (3/4)

Almost 1 day left to the end of 2020. I applied to 155 residency programs for the 2021 cycle. Not one 1 invite for an interview. Not sure what went wrong, but this is who I am: an ECFMG certified IMG with 4yrs work experience in Tropical Medicine ...#match2021 #MedTwitter
...and infectious disease prevention and management with a focus on underserved and marginalized populations living with HIV/AIDS in rural parts of Nigeria. I also have an MPH degree in Environmental and Occupational health from the Texas A&M School of Public Health...
I am looking to interview at Family medicine, Internal medicine and Pediatrics programs. I bring along with me, a host of transferable skills I have garnered from my diverse work and educational experiences. I am also very eager to learn and improve on my expertise...

OK! Here goes nothing. My first ever #tweetorial on the Coordinated Interview Release process for #Match2021.

This will be broken up into five parts:
1) What
2) Why
3) Who
4) How
5) Alternatives

#MedEd #MedStudentTwitter
Formatting inspired by the great @DrStevenTChen.

Starting with WHAT. What is a coordinated interview release?

A coordinated interview release 📨 is when numerous residency programs (ideally all programs*) agree to send out their interview invites on the same pre-determined day (or time frame) to applicants.
2.5/
*It's important to note that programs are constrained by factors out of their control – especially this year with #COVID19 & the coordinated release process being new for most specialties. Those who could not participate this year should in no way be viewed negatively.🆗!!

I hear from POC residency applicants about layers of isolation from virtual interviews. It reminds me of my own experience applying to programs, sitting around packed tables as the only applicant of color. We hope "Interviewed while Black" characterizes that common experience. Image
The paper started as an idea to write about my personal reflections. Later roped in @JoshuaEllisEM to collaborate. And then @AMLandryMD! Thrilled to have had @OnyekaOtugo join our team of Black authors writing about Black experiences. Feel greats to share the platform together. Image
As we enter #match2021, a new interview season, we hope this perspective brings awareness to the verbal & nonverbal unwelcoming cues that occur when interviewed as a Black applicant. We hope it nurtures further discourse, research, and problem solving.

Okay, #MedStudentTwitter. As promised, here’s how to tackle the WORST of all interview questions: “Do you have any questions?”. A thread 🧵
#Match2021 #PedsMatch2021
You will get this question. And you might get it more than once. And you might get it from every interviewer at your interview day. And you might have a ten minute interview with a PD where the ONLY question is “What questions do you have?”. So friends, you need questions.
Virtual interviews this year means there are A LOT of questions. But the main way to approach this question is to DO. YOUR. HOMEWORK.

Been trying to get back to the #AskAnIMG threads for a while & I finally found the time to tackle this one. So here goes!

Preparing your list of programs as an IMG..

A thread/ #match2021 #medtwitter
1/n Preparing my list was undoubtedly the most time-consuming task for the #myEras app. Going through a list of 500+ IM prog. in the US wasn’t a walk in the park & I was definitely glad that I started preparing early, thus, my number 1 tip is: the sooner you start the better
2/n The list can differ widely btw applicants & that’s bcz a lot of personal factors come into play when choosing where u want to spend the next 3+ years. Location, reputation, type of training, type of prog … r some of the variables that will help expand/trim down your list

- Make an initial list of programs you are interested in applying to.
- Do your #research: curriculum, front loaded?, number of residents, night float?, location, categorical or advanced (needs IM prelim)?
- Start asking for LoRs (May have to remind writer at least once)

2/
- Start working on your PS
- Have a note or document on your phone/PC for
ideas: You never know when a moment of inspiration
may happen!💡).
- Make as many corrections as needed
- Contact programs with any questions, specially if something is not clear to you

Let’s talk about the personal statement (PS)

Writing the PS might seem like one of the most daunting tasks for the ERAS application, & believe me it is. But here are a few tips & thoughts to facilitate the process

Thread No.2/

Side note: If you've missed Thread. No 1, feel free to check it out here
1/n. The earlier you start writing the better. Why? bcz the phases of writing a PS are the following: reflection, writing, rewriting, sending it for review, rewriting from scratch, re-sending for review, re-wri.. well you get the point. Bottom line, give your PS time to mature

2/n Going through the match season has been one of the most exciting experiences I’ve had since I began my journey in medicine & that has been the case because I tried to approach the whole process in a strategic manner allowing me to get the most out of this endeavor #Match2021
