१८५७ च्या बंडामध्ये यश न मिळालेल्यामुळे मौलाना अबुल कलाम यांचे वडील सौदी अरेबिया मध्ये जाऊन स्थायिक झाल्यानंतर तिथेच अबुल कलाम यांचा जन्म झाला. पुढे हे कुटुंब कलकत्त्यात येऊन स्थायिक झाले आणि अबुल कलम यांचं शिक्षण पारंपरिक धार्मिक पद्धतीने सुरू झालं.

लहान असताना स्वतःची लायब्ररी चालवणारे आझाद, आपल्यापेक्षा दुप्पट वयाच्या मुलांची शिकवणी घेत. लहानपणीच मुलांची डिबेटिंग सोसायटी स्थापन करून वेगवेगळ्या विषयातल्या आणि वेगळ्या विचारांचा प्रभाव पडल्याने त्यांचा ओढा हा भारतीय स्वातंत्र्य आणि हिंदू मुस्लिम ऐक्याकडे होता.
