Jesus and disciples gathered for the Last Supper. He raised a loaf of bread and cup of wine, gave thanks and shared it. In doing so, he affirmed the gift of humanity and announced forgiveness of sin, even for women and children that were present but not recognized in scripture.
Jesus transitions to the Garden of Gethsemane where he tells Peter, James and John to “stay awake” as he goes up Mt. Sinai, to grieve, “even to death.” He wrestles with his calling, questions God’s presence and returns to find the disciples unable to keep watch in midnight hour.
Today we should observe this moment in solemn silence. Reflections over ‘hymns’ that get us through, ‘Gardens of Gethsemane’ that force us into vast vulnerability and lonely moments this work will leave us asking God, “Where in the hell are you?”
Today is the 75th anniversary of the death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Those of you who know me know that I did my Master's thesis and PhD dissertation on his theology. @lmfabrycky--in my opinion--has written eloquently and beautifully on him in both this essay and her recent book.
One of the challenges of Bonhoeffer scholarship is that everyone wants to co-opt DB for their own purposes. It's easy to do, particularly given the nobility of his death. He is the unique historical character into whom we each love to read our "better angels," canonizing him.
DB wasn't perfect. Far from it. He was, by many accounts, somewhat of a diva. He didn't enjoy working more than a couple of hours a day. He certainly didn't enjoy sweating. His personal relationships were, at best, complicated. He annoyed many with his obstinate approach.
It makes sense that #MaundyThursday isn’t given attention in evangelical and moderate Christianity.
Even ones who might give a passing glance at #GoodFriday aren’t thrilled about today.

Because it’s not just about Jesus’ final meal and washing feet.
It’s about betrayal. It’s about a small group of disciples crossing from nuisances to security threats.
It’s about the Lord and Savior being arrested on false charges and taken away under police custody.

This story is anything but moderate.
And it takes a stunning side with those who are routinely ripped apart by a violent narrative from the conservatives and right-wing Christo-fascists in this country.
