The US bishops begin their meetings today — and will discuss the #McCarrickReport. They need to remember that this is not just about McCarrick, but about an ecclesial culture that looked other way, at every opportunity, despite being warned.

The #McCarrickReport, which likely wouldn't have been commissioned (and certainly would never be made public) by his predecessors, shows an institutional Church and 2 popes who placed an idealized vision of Catholicism over the reality of the abuse by leaders in the Church. 2/
I accept at face value the explanation that John Paul II fell prey to the lies of predators like McCarrick & Maciel, and thought they were innocent.
He certainly wouldn't CONDONE abuse. But he clearly placed his trust in clerics over the people of God. 3/

The report reveals that the John Paul II, now a saint, made those appointments despite being warned in 1999 by then-NY Cardinal O'Connor that McCarrick had been subject of anonymous allegations and was known to sleep in same bed as seminarians.

#McCarrickReport also places substantial blame at the feet of four Catholic bishops in New Jersey, where McCarrick had been serving as Archbishop of Newark before being named to Washington.
Archbishop Carlo Viganò, who has blamed Pope Francis for cover-up of allegations against McCarrick, did not follow Vatican instructions to investigate allegations against McCarrick. #McCarrickReport
