Meet Dr Yazad Irani, @Yaz_Sci, at @sahmriAU, the researcher paving the way to better outcomes in chronic myeloid #leukemia - by helping predict patient responses to #cancer therapy

Our blood is composed of red blood cells, in charge of carrying oxygen; and white blood cells, whose main function is to help the immune response to fight infections and diseases.
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a blood cancer in which a subpopulation of white blood cells, known as granulocytes, grow out of control. Although new treatments have resulted in good patient outcomes for 80% of patients, the remaining 20% of patients do not respond to therapy.

Meet Barbora Fulopova @BarbFulop, the PhD candidate at @WickingDementia @UTAS_ that is investigating how synaptic #plasticity changes in familial Alzheimer's Disease

A thread 👇

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to continuously change its neural connections, which is necessary for storing new information. This phenomenon is crucial for key processes including memory formation, skill acquisition, learning & adapting to our ever-changing environment.
Barbora is a PhD student at @WickingDementia @UTAS_. Her research focus is on understanding how brain plasticity is derived, through studying neural synapses (junctions between cells which are communication hotspots) in neurons from a 🐭model of familial Alzheimer’s Disease. Image

Meet Prof Vera Ignjatovic @IgnitingScience, the medical researcher - and former olympian - from @MCRI_for_kids that is changing the face of pediatric blood disorder research.

Blood clots are useful – they help us stop bleeding when we have an injury. However, the formation of blood clots within our blood stream (thrombosis) can have disastrous consequences – including death.
Children in hospital are much more likely to have thrombosis occur than healthy children. Childhood thrombosis has been described as the “new epidemic” in hospitals; venous thromboses in children = a 3% mortality rate, & survivors may experience long-term side effects.

Meet Dr Iman Izimi @ImanAzimiUTAS, a medical researcher from @UTAS_MedSci @TasSchoolMed @UTAS_ on the hunt for new cancer therapies with fewer side effects

A thread 👇

#cancer #researcherprofiles #research #medicalresearch #science #medicine #AcademicTwitter #ecrchat Image
Medulloblastoma is the most common fatal childhood brain cancer, with less than 60% of children surviving high-risk medulloblastoma. Current treatment options are not completely effective and include surgery, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy
Due to the harsh nature of these treatments, children who do survive the cancer often develop physical, cognitive, social and emotional impairments. New treatments with fewer side effects are urgently needed

Why do we advocate for medical research? The unsustainable costs of the projected health challenges will directly affect the future health care of all Australians. Investment into Australian health and medical research has delivered better health care for people.

For almost a century, the @nhmrc has overseen the distribution of research funding in Australia, using a series of robust processes that are directly underpinned by transparency and peer review.
Almost 50% of project applications submitted to the NHMRC are considered of high scientific quality and worthy of funding, but could not be supported because of lack of funds.

Shockingly, 1/4 of Medical Research Future Fund grants were awarded without due process. Genuine progress in any field of endeavour can only be achieved through the advancement of novel ideas that subsequently withstand questioning and criticism from experts in that field. Image
Deciding the merits of one research pursuit relative to another is a matter of judgement and debate; it requires a broad range of expertise, the absence of bias and adherence to consistent and transparent processes. It is not a task that should rest with a single person.
The integrity of this decision-making process is particularly important in the context of awarding research funding through competitive schemes, such as those through the @nhmrc

AN INSIDER’S VIEW OF THE #NHMRC INVESTIGATOR GRANT PEER-REVIEW PANEL
I wanted to share my experience as a peer-review panel member for the recent #NHMRC Investigator grants. #MedicalResearch @NHMRC @TheASMR1 @GregHuntMP
@nhmrc @TheASMR1 @GregHuntMP I’ve been an NHMRC assessor on ECR/MCR fellowship panels for the past 4 years, this restructure is changing how we assess research excellence. We, as Australian medical researchers, are all invested in this new scheme and we need it to be successful to support our sector.
@nhmrc @TheASMR1 @GregHuntMP Before you ask, I have clarified with NHMRC and run this past my RAO @UniofAdelaide. This information does not breach my confidentiality agreement with NHMRC.
